What MS Office 14′s Entry Will Mean for Netbooks

Steve Ballmer announced that the official release of Microsoft’s latest and most anticipated version of Office, Office 14 will be in 2010.

What we know is quite limited – However, it’s enough to keep us licking our lips.

One feature stands out as a sure hit for Netbook users - aside from the usual desktop versions, Office 14 will have lightweight and fully-functional versions of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and OneNote in the form of web apps. These will be accessible through browsers and your data will live in the cloud.

Office 14 in the cloud = Perfect for Netbooks

That means, you’ll only need Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Opera to work on a document, spreadsheet, or presentation.  You can therefore work on any Office file, say a Word document, in any operating system environment. Cloud based Office 14 also means there’s less processing load on your netbook.

Web based apps and cloud computing are two areas Netbooks are well suited for . They’re lightweight and the files they create don’t have to be stored locally. They’ll be hanging in the cloud, so to speak. Migrate your Office work to the cloud, and you don’t need to eat up your disk space.

It’s worth noting that the recent increase in netbook hard disk drive sizes means that if you prefer to keep your data on your netbook that’s very doable too. Just remember to stick with the 160 GB or bigger HDDs.

Office 14 in the cloud = Perfect for Collaboration

With Office 14′s cloud model, you can easily share your Word documents with others online in a highly collaborative environment. It’s entirely different from attaching a Word file to your email and sending it to a friend.

What if your friend has to edit that file too?

In the present version of Office, he’ll have to download the attachment and edit it using his own Word application. Once done, he’ll have to attach his edited file into an email and send it back to you.

How many versions of the same document will you effectively have at that point? FOUR.

  1. Your original file.
  2. The attachment in the email you sent him.
  3. His edited copy (in his computer).
  4. The one he attached to his email.

With the new upcoming Office 14, you’ll only have one. The one in the cloud. That way, you’ll only need to look in one place, and you’ll find the latest version of the file.

Simple and seamless synchronization.

Office 14 in the cloud means netbooks just became a lot more useful.
