VIDEO: NVIDIA Optimus Demo
I just finally understood what Optimus is thanks to Netbooked. It’s a power-saving device which switches graphics chips to save on power depending on what you’re currently doing.
When you’re typing documents, browsing web pages and generally using your netbook in a way that does not need any effort graphic-wise, Optimus will let Intel’s GMA 3150 do the work. If you want to play games and other things that need more power, graphic-wise, ION 2 will do the work.
Sure, it’s not something new and revolutionary, but they did improve on the technology. You no longer need to reboot to change graphic cards and Optimus works on the background. It decides on which graphics card to power up by detecting if DirectX, DVXA or CUDA are being used. Looks like you can also set which apps you want to use Optimus.
