Toshiba Dynabook UX 10″ Netbook – Big in Japan?

Toshiba is making an effort to freshen up their netbook family with the new Toshiba Dynabook UX-series netbooks  with the 10.1″ screens, a jump from the previous Satellite NB100 series (which was never released in the US) with the smaller 8.9″ displays.

Here are some of its features -

  1. A bigger screen with 1024×600 pixel resolution.
  2. One of the few netbooks in the market that sports a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 processor.
  3. It has 1GB of memory and a 160GB HDD.
  4. It promises an extended battery life. The NB100 offers 2.9 hours while the new UX series battery should last up to 4 hours. The extended batter could last for as long as 10.
  5. The new model also boasts of a smaller body despite the bigger screen. At 10.4″x7.6″x1.2″, it weights less than 2.9 pounds.
  6. It also runs on Windows XP Home and has 802.11b/g WiFi.

The UX-series will be out in Japan come Friday, and we can expect it to hit the US market soon after that, although there are no dates yet for international release. It’s reported to sell for 60,000 to 70,000 Yen in Japan which is around $600 to $700 US. Usually, netbooks are more expensive in Japan so we can expect that it would be less expensive when it finally gets into the US.

  • Again, a more comprehensive review once this netbook hits the US market. Its interesting that hardly any netbooks have Linux any more. Microsoft has been claiming >95% market share. It would make sense since netbooks don’t have Mac, there aren’t Android netbooks yet, and people have been returning Linux netbooks because they can’t handle the learning curve. its also interesting that Mark Shuttleworth at Ubuntu has been claiming he’s confident of Linux’s future on netbooks given that they went from significance to <10% market share in a year.
