The Rumormill: Mobile Phone makers and Netbooks
It’s only fair for mobile phone manufacturers to venture into the netbook space. After all, Apple set off the balance by getting into the mobile computing space with the iPhone two years ago, with Acer gearing up to release its Tempo Smartphone F900 and rumors of a Dell smart phone in development.
Turning the scales around, rumors were abreast in June that Nokia was dipping its toes into netbook waters, shortly after the Nokia-Intel partnership went through. Well, Nokia’s CEO Olli Pekka Kallasvuo made the matter official (sort of) in India last week, saying the company was considering getting into netbooks:
“We at Nokia is actively looking at this converged market…We are looking at the netbook market to see what kind of opportunity is there.”
Corroborate this with the fact that Nokia ordered netbooks from Quanta and Compal a couple of months ago. Something’s up.
And Nokia isn’t the only mobile phone manufacturer looking to get into the laptop market. This week has been filled with rumors that Sony Ericsson may be coming out with a smartbook in the new future. The folks at the Mirror have their eyes set on Qualcomm as the manufacturer even though nothing is confirmed yet.

So there you have it. Rumors that may very well shape the future of the portable-mobile-internet-computing-devices-that-may-also-serve-as-cell-phones market.
I wonder what form factor these portable-mobile-internet-computing-devices-that-may-also-serve-as-cell-phones will take. Bigger iPhones with touch screens or smaller laptops like the Vaio P? And what kind of processors will they come up?
Sigh. Premature speculating? They’re most likely on their way in the next year or two, so instead of speculating on their existence, I’m going down the more fun route of speculating what they’ll look like
