The Perfect Netbook…
Posted on June 15th, 2009 by Nidhi
New netbooks come out everyday… yet there’s no one single netbook that encompasses every great feature. Here’s my list of what every netbook should have, and what my dream netbook will have.
What every netbook SHOULD have by the end of 2009
- Windows 7 – d’oh. (Unless you’re into Android and Ubuntu/Linux)
- Spacious keyboards – most netbooks have good keyboards…most.
- Built in 3G – saves about a half hour of battery life when compared to an external 3G modem/USB.
- Light weight – I’m talking weight of no more than 2.7lbs with a six cell battery. Netbooks were mean to be light – I don’t want to see any new 3 lb devices!
- Touch pads with buttons on the bottom - where they belong.
- N280 processor or higher, and at least 1GB RAM
- Built in mic
- Over 4 hours in battery life – my MacBook does it, and the made-to-be-portable-netbook should too.

The Dream Netbook
Hopefully by mid 2010…
- 3Qi esque screen – or something similar with black & white and color settings for indoor viewing and outdoor viewing. I’d love to be able to read my screen in the great outdoors.
- NVIDIA Ion graphics card - in the dream world, the card comes with the ability to handle flash (which Hulu, YouTube etc. run on). By allowing the GPU to proccess flash, the dream netbook would also prove to be more power efficient.
- Multi-touch screen options & software - I’m thinking like the iPhone…. and with a range of touch-screen-specific-mobile-computing softwares
- Tablet feature – the display should be able to rotate 360 and fold over, and come with a stylus. (Like the Asus T91)
- GPS – which would make netbooks perfect for traveling to new and exotic places. Absolutely perfect. I’m picturing a tablet, touch-screen, GPS device which can be used outdoors…
- 2GB – 4GB RAM – Only because I’d like to know what the world would be like with 4GB RAM netbooks….
- Hybrid Storage – which will lead to extraordinary battery life (like the soon to be banned MSI Wind U115). I’ll settle for 6 hours, but I know 9 hours is actually possible (like the Asus 1000HE).
That’s all I can think of for now! Did I miss anything? :) Before you scoff at me for dreaming so big, keep in mind that this will all be possible by the end of 2010. At the speed at which technology is bustling forth, how can it not!
