The Future of Intel Atom Chips Revealed

Intel Atom Roadmap

We’ve heard about the next generation Intel Atom chips, codenamed Pine Trail, which integrates the CPU and GPU in one chip. Intel has also unveiled the future of the Atom line, showing plans for a 32nm, a 22nm, then 15nm chips. Looks like the main goal for the Intel Atom chips is geared towards the improvement of battery life (as well as getting smaller).

If that is so, future netbooks running on Intel Atom processors should be expected, not to be able to handled CPU-intensive tasks, but to run longer and be more efficient. Intel might be looking at competing with ARM processors.

The Intel Atom is not the only power-efficient processors for portables and ultraportables. The CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) performs better than the Atom chips and are more expensive, but still very efficient.

We have yet to see how an Intel Atom Pine Trail in real action, but looks like Engadget has and says that while there’s nothing outright stunning in the little chip’s performance, it will definitely mean lighter, thinner netbooks that can run as long as you wouldn’t believe on a single charge.
