Acer Review, Asus Review – Netbook 10

Digital Gadgets manufacture Sylvania computers and they’ve jumped into the netbook market with their G range of netbooks. In this post we’ll focus on the 8.9″ Meso netbook and the 10″ Magni Elite Slate netbook as the 7″ was/is rather unimpressive.

Sylvania Magni Elite 10″ G netbook

The 10″ Magni Elite G Netbook from Sylvania is a very recent release (as of Feb 21st, 2009) and the latest G Netbook comes with -

1. Priced at $336-$349 for the various colors.
2. 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, which is increasingly becoming the defacto Processor for netbooks.
3. 10-inch screen has a WSVGA resolution (1024 x 600).
4. Only available in Windows XP Home which speaks to the fact that XP is beating out Linux in the Netbook market.
5. 160 GB Hard Drive and 1 GB memory.
6. 6 cell battery for improved battery life.
7. Weighs 2.65 pounds.
8. Its available in Black (GNET31201XS), White (GNET31201XF), Pink (GNET31201XP) Colors. Black is in stock, and as of Feb 22nd 2009, pink and white are available for pre-order.

Sylvania Magni Elite 10″ Ratings

The ratings that the Sylvania 10″ netbook gets are -

1. Power + Performance: A-. Good solid specs.
2. Price: A. Have to give kudos to Sylvania for keeping the price low.
3. Portability: A. 6 cell battery and low weight are good.
4. Looks: B. I don’t really like the unique industrial design and eye catching colours design concept that Sylvania has gone with. It just seems a bit toy-like.
5. Usability: A-.

Overall, the Magni Elite 10″ Sylvania netbook gets a pretty solid A- grade. Its a pretty decent netbook. I would recommend waiting for a few more reviews on Amazon before buying.

Sylvania Meso 8.9″ G Netbook

The 8.9″ Meso Netbook from Sylvania was its second offering (after the 7″) and did a better job.

1. Now available for just $299 at Amazon.
2. There is an option to choose the Ubuntu Netbook Remix OS or Windows XP Home.
3. It only weighs 2.2 pounds.
4. It comes with a 8.9 inch screen and a matte display – which some people like much more than a glossy screen.
5. It comes with a 4 cell battery which isn’t really ideal.
6. 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor, 80 GB Hard drive, and 1 GB RAM.
7. Available in 4 colors – black (GNET28001XON), white (GNET28001XSN), pink (GNET28001XON), and yellow(GNET28001XSO), which Sylvania calls Onyx, Snow, Blossom, and Solar. I found the white and yellow quite interesting.

Sylvania 8.9 Meso Netbook Ratings

The 8.9″ Meso’s ratings are -

1. • Power + Performance: A- as its decent for a $299 laptop.
2. Price: A. Good price with the new $50 instant discount.
3. Portability: B. 4 cell battery is not enough.
4. Looks: B. I really don’t like the design. The yellow and white look OK – However, this is not one of the prettier netbooks.
5. Usability: B. The keyboard is tiny and lots of complaints.

Overall, the 8.9″ Meso G netbook misses the grade – It gets just a B/B+ grade and I’d recommend looking at an Asus or Acer Aspire One netbook instead.
