State of the Internet (and cloud computing)
Posted on January 4th, 2010 by Nidhi
GigaOm has some great stats on how many people in the US have internet subscriptions and how much time Americans spend online. He tracks the growth of both these in the last decade. Let’s start with…
Increase in people online & with broadband subscriptions
- 2.7 million Americans with broadband subscription in 1999 vs. 80 million in 2009 (that’s nearly 30 times what it was!) This is estimated to grow to almost 100 million in the next five years/2014
- 113 million Americans online in 1999 vs. 184 million in 2009. Of these, the number online at home has increased to 76% in 2009 from 66% in 2006.

Increase in amount of time spent online
- US adults spend an average of 13 hours week online (this seems kind of low doesn’t it – it excludes time spent on email). In 1999 this figure averaged 7 hours. In fact, before the recession went bust in 2008, the average was 14 hours a week.
- Most time spent online by those between the ages 30 – 39 –> 18 hours/week
- This is followed by those in age groups 26 – 29 and 40 – 49 –> 17 hours/week
- Other interesting numbers: 1% spent less than 1 hour/week online. 14% said over 24 hours. (I must avg. about 5 hours/day online :| tough to calculate since most of my on computer time = online time. ah cloud computing!). Overall, 50% said over 8 hours, and 50% said under 8 hours.
