Samsung N140 – Now Available, and with Windows 7
The Samsung N140 netbook is available for pre-order and will release tomorrow on October 22, the day Windows 7 is made available to the world.
Samsung’s finally releasing some new netbooks, now that the Windows 7 general availability date is almost here! The Samsung N140 is (unofficially) the next gen version of the Samsung NC-10, which is one of our other writer Denise’s favorite netbooks. Some key differences: improved exterior, keyboard that’s slightly larger than the NC10′s already large 93% keyboard, and a non-glossy screen. AND some extremely clever software bits that you won’t find easily on other netbooks. Not bad at $400.
Some cool new features in the Samsung N140
- Remote control of files with Fail Safe service - so you can track your computer if it’s every stolen and retrieve/erase/encrypt data. Which means you can also do so if it isn’t stolen which is quite handy if you’re moving back and forth between multiple computers.
- Speed-mode button – with this, you can focus all your computer resources to one window. Which would make streaming videos or video chatting with someone via gChat flow so so smoothly. Try this button out if there’s a Samsung N140 somewhere around you in the next couple of weeks, it might just be a deal-breaking feature, since the rest of the netbook looks quite fine.
Not new, but deserve mention:
- Non-glare screen – yay for using your netbook in the greater outdoors! Or in coffee shops when the sun is shining something special and you’re having a hard time reading your screen.
- Claims 11 hours of battery - let’s wait for the netbook to come out and for the higher capacity six cell battery to be tested before we get excited about this. But boy! does 11 hours sound amazing. If true, I may have to use this netbook as a benchmark instead of the Asus Eee PC 1005HA!
*The 11 hour version isn’t available yet, but the 7.5 hour one is. - 1 USB Port that charges when netbook is switched off – very handy for charging your mobile phones/iPod etc.
- Internal microphone

Bottom line
I’m quite smitten by the Samsung N140. It’s backed up by Samsung’s reputation for coming out with awesome netbooks. If the high capacity 6 cell battery lives up to its promise of 11 hours, there’s nothing stopping this netbook from reaching the top. It has good specs (1.66GHz N280, 250 GB HDD), a Speed Mode that sounds tempting and overall good features bunched into a good looking netbook, all for $400. And it comes with the lightweight Windows 7! Totally worth it!
