Samsung Go (N310) Review : Probably the Coolest Netbook Around

Samsung has been very competitive, and quite successful at it, with other netbook makers, coming up with awesome products such as the Samsung NC10 and the awesome 12.1″ Samsung NC20. Most recently, they have the Samsung GO, which is what the N310 has been rebranded to. The name might just give a clue as to why. The battery just went on, and on, and on.

Features and Drawbacks

  • Cool new design – The new chassis has rounded, smooth edges, and the lid has a grainy, rubberized feel that gives it a durability that a plastic shell would never be able to offer. It was designed by Japanese artist, Naoto Fukasawa, and while the lid is a plus for me, the huge Samsung lettering that screams from one end of the cover to another may just be a bit too much. Subtle, it was definitely not.

  • Awesome Keyboard – I can’t stop harping about the nano-sized silver ion powder that keeps the keyboard bacteria-free. And that’s not all, it’s a 94% keyboard which means it’s wide and comfortable, with the same kind of keys you can find on the MacBook and some of the Sony Vaio models. The touchpad is a bit small, and quite narrow but not that bad, you wouldn’t want to use it.
  • Great display – The Samsung Go has a 10.1″, 1024 x 600 pixel, LED-backlit glass screen. A software can increase the screen resolution to 1024 x 768, but I much prefer the lower res one because then the images aren’t compressed on the screen.
  • Incredible Battery Life – Amazon claims that the 6-cell battery can last up to 10 hours. And while it didn’t last as long, the 8 and a half-hours that it can run while surfing the net through WiFi, is already awesome. Netbooks go from 4 to 6 hours, so 8 hours is definitely no slouch in the battery department.
  • Comes with Software – Software options include CyberLink’s YouCam and McAfee Security Center, a Recovery Solution III which makes a restore file of the operating system, Samsung Battery Life Extender, Samsung Magic Doctor which detects and corrects application issues, and the Easy Network Manager which helps connect to a wireless access point.

Bottomline

Very, very good netbook. It has a very solid, sturdy build, promises durability and reliability, and even protection for germs. It’s performance is not only very good, but it can go for a long, long time, too. The Samsung Go is currently selling at a discounted price of $449 instead of the original $479 at Amazon and comes in four colors. The Jet Black, and Sunset Orange haven’t been released but are available for pre-order. The Mint Blue and Midnight Blue are both ready to ship. It’s definitely worth the price.
