Samsung is going to be coming up with the Samsung N102, a 10-inch netbook with a low power processor as well as a low price tag. On the outside, it looks exactly like the Samsung N100 which is cheaper as it runs MeeGo Linux. The Samsung N102 will run Windows 7 Starter edition.

Specs are pretty standard. It comes with a 1.33GHz Intel Atom N435 processor, 1GB of DDR3 memory, 250GB harddrive, Intel GMA graphics and 10.1 inch 1024 x 600 pixel display with a 3 cell, 40Whr battery.

When AMD’s Fusion processors burst into the scene, it heralded a long line of quality but budget machines. One that’s probably the least expensive is the quirky and attractive Acer Aspire One 722 which is selling from Amazon.com for only $379.99. It has an AMD C-series processor which is a little less powerful than the E-series but still snappy. Throw in a decent battery life, the Aspire One 722 is a good option for an AMD Fusion netbook.

Features and Drawbacks

Pretty design – If we’re talking about the design, the ripple effect on the Aspire One 722 is one of my favorites. Oh, I’m the type who’d like a solid color on the lid but this is really nice. Like a spa. It looks simple but attractive, and not all off-putting for guys, especially in black. It also comes in Aquamarine. It measures 11.2 x 7.9 x 1.0 inches and at 3 pounds, it’s a bit heavier than most netbooks but still not a heavy-weight.

Less than stellar keyboard – I consider a good keyboard very important which is why if I ever get myself a tablet, I’d still have a desktop, laptop and/or netbook on the side. I like good feedback from my keyboard and this one is a bit stiff. I got a little frustrated. The touchpad is okay though. It’s quite responsive. It has the same texture as the palmrest but my finger didn’t miss it. The single mousebar is also long enough that you don’t hit the wrong button by mistake.

Dim screen but not very reflective – For a glossy screen, the Aspire One 722′s LED-backlit 11.6-inch, 1366 x 768 resolution display isn’t very reflective, thank you, but is it just me and my myopic eyes or is it dim even if you adjust the brightness?

Faster than your average netbook – Tests on the Aspire One 722 show that it can perform better (at least on tests) as your average Intel Atom-powered netbook. It also a speedy little thing if you’re going to use it for everyday computing. You might want to look at something else for gaming though and video transcoding. But for Internet, Word docs and other stuff, it’s pretty good.

Good battery life – Acer advertised up to 7 hours of battery life and the Aspire One 722 lasted only a few minutes less than that. It could definitely last you a whole work day.

Rating – 6/7

Value for Money – 1
Speed and Performance – 1
Screen – 0.5
Keyboard – 0.5
Portability & Battery Life – 1
Looks and Design – 1
Extensibility & connectivity – 1

Technical Specifications

AMD C-Series Processor C-50(1.0GHz, 1MB L2 cache)

11.6″ HD Widescreen CineCrystal LED-backlit Display

Windows 7 Home Premium

4GB DDR3 Single-Channel Memory

500GB SATA Hard Drive

ATI Radeon HD 6250 Graphicswith 256MB of dedicated system memory

Multi-in-One Digital Media Card Reader

Built-in 0.3 Megapixel Webcam; Two Built-in Stereo Speakers

Full-Size Acer FineTip Keyboard

Multi-Gesture Touchpadsupporting circular-motion scrolling, pinch-action zoom and page flip

6-cell Li-ion Batteryup to 7-hours battery life

3.21 lbs. | 1.46kg (system unit only)

Bottomline
It has an eye-catching design, performs admirably, has a long battery life and only costs $380. So yes, we’re recommending :) It’s definitely a good deal.

The Acer Aspire One AO722-BZ848 11.6-Inch HD Netbook (Espresso Black) is available from Amazon for $379.99.
I really love the designations of the colors on the Acer Aspire Happy 2. Banana Cream, Blueberry Shake, Papaya Milk and Strawberry Yogurt seems like a lovely, delicious (and healthy) feast. And for $269.99 you can get one from Amazon with a dual-core N570 processor. It also dropped the dual-boot Google Android 2.1 and stuck with Windows 7.

The Acer Aspire Happy 2 also has the ripple water drop design on the cover which we also saw on the Acer Aspire One D257 which, incidentally, is also selling for $269.99. The Espresso Black is actually only $248.99.

The Happy comes with the following specs:

Intel Atom Processor Dual-Core N570

10.1″ WSVGA Acer CrystalBrite LED-backlit Display

Windows 7 Starter

Microsoft Office Starter 2010

1GB DDR3 SDRAM Memory

250GB SATA Hard Drive

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150

Multi-in-One Digital Media Card Reader

802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi CERTIFIED

10/100 Fast Ethernet LAN

Built-in 0.3 Megapixel Webcam

Two Built-in Speakers

Multi-Gesture Touchpad

3- USB 2.0 Ports

3-cell Li-ion Batteryup to 4-hour battery life

2.65 lbs. | 1.2 kg(system unit only)

If you look at the Acer Aspire One D257 page, you’d find out that they virtually the same specs, only that the D257 comes in more somber colors.

Features and Drawbacks

Nice design – It looks pretty well put together, with a soft to the touch, matte-black finish on the lid and the palm rest. There’s also a nifty sliding door for the webcam for when you’re not using it, and to ensure! that you’re not using it. It’s 10.3 x 7.1 x 0.9 inches on the thinnest part and 1.4 inches at the back. Sturdy little thing actually.

Pretty good keyboard with some tiny keys – The chiclet style keyboard is nice but the tiny right shift key can get a little frustrating because your finger would most likely miss it. The touchpad is also quite roomy with thin silver strips to separate it from the rest of the palm rest. There’s also one bar at the bottom without any noticeable left or right buttons. The touchpad is okay to use and so is the mouse bar. Just don’t click too near the middle as to confuse the bar.

Something to be desired when it comes to performance – While the netbook boots pretty quickly, at least a few seconds faster than the netbook average, the AMD processor works pretty slowly you use the netbook for everyday task. I usually go through Google Chrome and Firefox with several tabs open (up to eight at one time), at least one MS Word doc, at least two Notepads, my work software, Tweetdeck and iTunes when I work. Watching a low-res video with a few tabs open while working on WordPad pretty much works, but I wouldn’t be able to run my usual work set-up (as mentioned above). Clicking from one browser to the next already causes lags, and some apps hesitate when you open them.

6-hour battery life – Battery life lasted about six and a half hours on a single charge. Most netbooks last pretty much that long so the 1015B’s six-cell battery is quite good on that score.

Rating – 5.5/7

Value for Money – 0.5
Speed and Performance – 0.5
Screen – 1
Keyboard – 0.5
Portability & Battery Life – 1
Looks and Design – 1
Extensibility & connectivity – 1

Technical Specifications

AMD C30 CPU

1GB DDR3 RAM (1x1GB, 1 Slot)

10.1″ WSVGA (1024×600) LED screen

Windows 7 Starter Operating System (32 Bit)

Bottomline
The Asus Eee PC 1015B is pretty much an average netbook choice. It works pretty well if you’re not a heavy user, heavy meaning you multitask to bits, the AMD processor can pretty much handle it. Graphics is pretty good, benchmark-wise, as well as when you’re using it. And at $251.29, it’s a pretty good value. But for the same price, or close to it, you can take a look at other netbooks running an Intel Atom chip.

One of the convertible netbooks that is of any interest to me is the Dell Inspiron Duo because of its definite unique looks. Unlike other convertible netbooks, such as the Asus Eee PC T101MT or the Gigabyte T1005M, this doesn’t “twist”. It flips. Cool huh? But is the specs and performance aspects of the netbook at par with its innovative design?

[Rating: 4.5/7]

Features and Drawbacks

Interesting flip design which makes it bulkier than usual – The touchscreen swivels horizontally which is something new and unique. Let’s face it, that’s something you don’t see everyday. It has an attractive chassis. It’s also sturdy because the top of the lid as well as the sides are made of rubberized material. The back of the screen also has an attractive glossy paisley design and the Dell logo. What’s practical about the design is that the hinges are more likely to stay firm without the constant swiveling. The downside is that there’s more than an inch of bezel around the display.

Flat keys, responsive keyboard – I’m not a big fan of flat keys, but the Dell Inspiron Duo’s keyboard looks really good. The thing is there isn’t a lot of tactile feedback so while it’s easy to come right up to your normal typing speed, you’re more likely to commit errors if you’re a touch typist. The touchpad is responsive though and supports multi-touch gesture. There’s this sort of annoying space between the mouse buttons and the end of the device though, but since I hardly use the touchpad, it doesn’t really bother me (thank you, mouse).

Clear sound, but nothing extraordinary – But then again, you’d expect that from an average netbook. The volume is rather weak even at max but nothing decent external speakers can’t cure. It’s not that bad, really. It’s just not that good either.

Viewing angles are a hit-or-miss – It has a 1366 x 768 resolution display (glossy) that shows bright, sharp colors but you have to find the perfect viewing angle to be able to watch a video clearly. One angle which would be perfect for one video might not work for another, darker or lighter, video. You’d also need to hold the netbook at an angle to see the screen clearly because watching a video with the device flat on its back is not a very pleasant experience.

Responsive Touchscreen, Slow-loading Apps – The capacitive touchscreen is responsive and easy to use. Pinch-to-zoom works like a charm in most cases. The netbook also comes with the Dell Stage, a custom user interface which works on top of Windows 7. It’s attractive and helpful, but there’s no way for you to add your own shortcuts. It’s also a bit sluggish at times and honestly, needs as much work as Windows 7′s touchscreen capabilities. The idea is good though. Over-all performance is actually good, not counting the slow-loading apps. If you discount the Dell Stage, it’s actually a decent enough netbook. Again, decent, but you won’t get a glowing review from me.

Weak, short battery life – Three hours definitely counts as short. Netbook average is at 6+ hours and this barely reaches half of that. And mind you, the three hours only consist of surfing over WiFi. No games or videos. What’s worse, the battery can neither be removed nor upgraded so it’s not at all a recommendable mobile device unless you plan to bring the adapter brick and stick close to a power outlet.

Technical Specifications

1.5-GHz Dual-Core Atom N550

2 GB RAM

320GB SATA Hard Drive

10.1 1366×768 resolution display

802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 + EDR

Windows 7 Home Premium

Bottomline
Bottomline is that the design may be cool, but with the threat of too much frustration with the Dell Inspiron Duo pains me to say that I can’t exactly say go forth and get one because there are a lot, and I mean A LOT of better netbooks/convertibles out there. It’s short battery life, sluggish performance and not at all a good media netbook paired up with it’s $549.99 price tag makes this machine a questionable choice. For that kind of money, you can get a decent netbook or a tried and tested iPad if you really want a tablet. But Dell’s got something right with the design as well as the responsive screen. I’d love to see one running Google Android. Then, maybe, we’ll talk.

Similar to it’s sister company Acer, Gateway is selling it’s 10″ LT series of netbooks with Windows 7 starter. Read our full review of the Gateway LT series. Here are the different customizations and price points you can choose from at Amazon:

Range 1 – Fast processor, lots of storage, so-not-worth-the-price

1.66GHz Intel N280, 250GB HDD, 6 cell battery. Available in Black and Red. $380

Range 2 – Meh, good specs, but same as everyone else

1.6GHz Intel N270, 250GB HDD, 6 cell battery. Available in Black* and Red. $340

*available for pre-order

Range 3 – The range where you really question why Gateway is selling 10″ netbooks at all. This config is available for $30 less and comes with a 3 cell battery

1.6GHz Intel N270, 160GB HDD, 3 cell battery. Available in Black and Red. $330

Bottom line – I’ve always maintained there’s a very specific user who opts for the Gateway netbooks. The netbooks never add anything new and seem to capitalize on the fact that netbooks are doing so well, their copycat netbooks might as well grab a bite of the profits too. The netbooks are completely standard, don’t offer the most competitive prices but do have high aesthetic values. They look good. But who buys a netbook based on looks alone?

The six cell battery makes the overall netbook a little hefty at 2.8lbs. This netbook is comparable to the Asus 1005HA which has a 10hour battery life but a smaller 160GB hard drive and costs a little more at $380.

The medium range, I’m surprised it exists. While you’ll save $10-$20, you’re compromising with a slightly slower 1.6GHz N270 processor. I recommend you pay up and go for the N280 – it’ll totally be worth the extra bucks in the long run.

This netbook makes sense if portability isn’t an issue. If you’re leaving it at home plugged in, the $300 price tag is awesome! ($300 for a Windows 7 netbook!) It’s even ideal if you make short trips to the local coffee shop since the lighter 3 cell battery (which only survives for 2-3 hours) is a quite lighter making this model weigh only 2.4lbs. This one’s also a good buy for the kids. The purple and coral pink are especially riveting colors.
