Adults aren’t the only ones online on this day and age. There are probably more kids on the Internet than adults considering how more computer-savy children are nowadays. Netbooks, with their tiny keyboards and great portability, are actually perfect for kids. But while size does matter, which netbooks are really perfect for your children? Good thing that Dell and Asus have come up with kid-friendly netbooks that would cut a parent’s worry (hardware-, and Internet-wise) in half, if not more. Let’s take a look at some really good choices for your kids.

Things to Consider
First up, you have to consider several things when you’re thinking of getting the little one a netbook of his or her own.

1. Internet Security
The Internet can be a scary place to be especially for a child. There are a lot of people who can take advantage (not just of children) and you don’t want your baby to get mixed up with the wrong sort.

Windows has parental controls. This way, you’re able to limit the websites your kids will be able to visit, the programs they can run, and games they can play on a computer. Windows 7 is a very good OS for a netbook, and you can easily set up parental controls for a Windows 7 netbook.

2. Durability
Take a good look at your child. Will he/she be able to take care of a netbook? Or will it most likely end up covered in cookie crumbs or flying several feet into the air? Or will it last him/her several years? Look for a tough and durable netbook that can withstand anything from serious play to temper tantrums.

At this point, your main concern would be more on a netbook’s physical durability rather than how much RAM it has or how long the battery life lasts. Pick a netbook that’s tough. What comes to mind is the Samsung Go. It has a tough, rubberized lid plus it has a germ-free keyboard ;) Point of fact, your child can probably use it straight into high school.

3. Size
How big a netbook do you want to give your kid? Netbooks come in several sizes. The smaller ones have 7- to 8-inch screens with others coming in with 12″ screens. Your child might be more comfortable starting with 8.9″-screened netbooks, of which there are a lot of awesome choices.

4. Price
How much are you willing to pay for your little one’s netbook? $300? $400? There are a lot of good options out there that are not very expensive. There are smaller netbooks that are perfect for little hands. They’re also usually cheaper than the bigger, newer netbooks, but they work pretty well. So well, in fact, that even you can use them.

With those in mind, let’s take a look at the Top 5 Netbooks that are Perfect for Kids.

1. The Disney Netpal
The new Disney Netpal is an 8.9″ netbook with all the bells and whistles an Eee PC has to offer with additional Disney perks such as screensavers, widgets, games and programs. It comes with Windows XP Home, a spill-proof keyboard and ShockShield data protection that ensures the safety of your child’s netbook even if he/she has butterfingers. This comes in Magic Blue and Princess Pink and is priced at $349.99 from Amazon.com.

2. Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition
The Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition is Dell and Nickelodeon’s answer to the Disney/Asus Netpal. This is an Inspiron Mini 10v netbook that can be customized with characters from iCarly and Spongebob Squarepants, and also allows customization when it comes to games and TV programs they can watch from Nick.com. There are also parental controls and the like. Price has not been announced for this netbook as of this writing.

3. Samsung Go
As I mentioned above, the Samsung Go is pretty much one of the toughest netbooks out in the market today. It’s definitely kid-friendly if we’re talking about durability, but it’s also a great netbook for you if you want to share netbooks with your kids. It’s definitely good enough to handle both your needs. Just don’t forget to set up parental controls, and you’re all set. The Samsung Go is a little more expensive at $447.76 from Amazon.com. You definitely might want to share this one.

4. Acer Aspire One
Acer also has an 8.9″ netbook, the Acer Aspire One AOA110-1588. The Sapphire Blue option is $319.99 from Amazon (the Black one is a whopping $599.99). It comes with 16 GB storage, 1GB RAM, and a 2.5-hour battery. It’s also rates fairly well on Amazon and comes from one of the top netbook makers in the world.

5. Asus Eee PC 900
The Asus Eee PC 900 is a 16GB, 8.9″ netbook that’s the perfect size for a child. It has pretty much everything a netbook user needs whether a child or an adult. It’s not as fun as the Netpal but you can customize it on your own. And since it’s Windows-run, you can easily set up parental controls on it, too. Remember, Asus comes up with the most highly rated netbooks so you don’t have to worry about performance or durability. What’s more, the Eee PC 900 is only $279.00 from Amazon.

Whichever netbook you get your little one, the best, and most important, thing to keep in mind is “what will benefit my child the most?” Think about which programs you would install, how much or how little your child will be able to access online, who will he/she be able to communicate with. Will your child learn? Will your child be happy? Think about what’s best for him/her and whichever netbook you choose, you can’t go wrong :)

Fuel efficiency is one of the top things you look for when buying a car. Why should it be any different when looking for your netbook? Here’s a look at how netbooks rank in terms of battery life.

Battery life varies depending on several factors including -

Intensity of the applications you are running.

Type of battery (3 cell, 4 cell, 6 cell etc.).

Power saving options available.

Amount of energy consumed by hard drive.

Also, you want a netbook that lasts long and works well. This list ranks laptops based on their battery lives as well as other specs including ease of use and computing power.

1. Asus Eee PC 1000 HE – 9 hours
The Asus 1000 HE uses a 6 cell high density battery (8700mAh) that boasts up to 9.5 hours of use. In practice, it lasts for a bit over 7 hours, which is still very impressive for a netbook. It uses Intel’s Atom N280 - a small, powerful processor that requires less power to run.

While the 1000 HE is a popular model because of its computing power and large keyboard, it is one of the heaviest netbooks weighing 3.2 pounds. If you don’t mind lugging it around, the 1000 HE is a good choice for heavy computing. (available at Amazon for under $400)

If the 1000 HE is over your price range, you can get the Asus 1000 HA for $50 less at Amazon. The 1000 HA has a battery life of 6-7 hours and similar features.

2. Samsung N120 – 10.5 hours
Priced higher at almost $ 500 (Amazon) Samsung’s N120’s 6 cell battery offers a battery life of up to 10.5 hours. This netbook is perfect for trans-Atlantic and Pacific trips - you can watch a couple of movies with battery life that long.

The N120 weighs only 2.8 pounds and its screen is quite large at 10.71’. A feature unique to the N120 are its speakers which are built in on both sides of the screen.

3. Samsung NC10 – 9 hours
Another netbook with a 6 cell battery, the Samsung NC10 is a popular choice for many reasons. It lasts for almost 7 hours before using power saving options, has a solid Atom N270 processor, weighs less than 3 pounds (2.8 lbs to be exact) and has a large keyboard and sleeker design than most models.

For a company that started manufacturing netbooks later in the game, Samsung’s NC10 is one of the better notebooks available today. (available at Amazon for under $450).

Samsung NC10 - A great netbook with great battery life

4. Acer Aspire One AOD150 – 6.5 hours
The Acer AOD150 is a high standard 10.1’ netbook that promises a decent battery life. Expect it to run for about 5 hours after heavy use. The AOD150 is slightly lighter than the Asus 1000 HE at 2.95lbs, and has a slightly less impressive range of features. It biggest advantage is its retail price – about $50 cheaper than the 1000 HE (via Amazon).

Just make sure the 6 cell battery it comes with is a 5800mAh to get the full 6.5 hour life. The 6 cell 4400mAh battery lasts only 4.5 hours.

5. HP Mini 1000 series – 6-7 hours
The HP Mini 1000 series also stands out as far as its battery is concerned. The batteries are sleek and come in a slim square size, making it convenient to carry a spare battery in your handbag or netbook bag.

After wide anticipation, HP recently released an extended 6 cell battery that weighs a little longer but lasts for 6-7 hours. The battery is an expensive add-on at over a $100, but the extended life allows you to seriously consider buying an HP Mini – one of the best-looking netbooks available.

–
Not included in this list is MSI’s upcoming netbook which will redefine our view on battery life entirely. The Wind U115 promises a battery life of over 10 hours and is speculated to last for an entire day. It will be launched this summer in the UK, much to the dismay of netbook fans in the rest of the world. Read more about it here.

You may have noticed that all the laptops on the list use 6 cell batteries for the extended life. With 9 cell batteries being introduced in the market, you really want to make sure you stay away from the 3 cells if battery life is a priority for you.

It’s not too difficult to understand why netbooks have been so popular. If you’re one of the skeptics, or if you’re one of those who still seem baffled as to why anybody would want a miniaturized notebook with extremely limited specs, this post’s for you.

Here, we outline the top 5 reasons that have made the netbook the phenomenal hit that it is. Now, supposedly, the netbook shouldn’t be compared with the notebook for the simple reason that it is an entirely different device altogether.

However, there are some sectors that insist on calling it a mini-notebook, putting it back into the same category as notebooks, in order to highlight its limitations. No problem with that.

Let us list out the top 5 reasons customers have picked the netbook over the notebook. Top 5 Netbook advantages, compared to notebooks, are:

Price. Should you look for a better deal than $245 for a device that can do “basic” computer tasks? The price of the original Asus Eee PC was pegged at this … apparently, that’s all it took for those with very limited budgets to open their wallets. People who found it unimaginable to purchase a notebook before were willing to settle for a netbook because of the affordability. Now models range from $250 all the way up to $700 (Asus N10). The most popular models come in at around $400 and that’s a very affordable price point. At first glance, it would seem that that would be the only reason. There are, however, a few more big reasons to pick a netbook.

Portability – Size. With some weights that barely go beyond 1 kg and dimensions that make them literally very “handy”, it’s easy to carry them around. Most laptops need a wide platform or a table before you can use them. Netbooks don’t. Ever heard of a laptop that can fit a purse? A netbook can.

Portability – Battery Life. Yes, we’d like to emphasize on this quality. This time, let’s focus on its battery life. When would you consider a notebook portable in the truest sense of the word? Not everyone would set weights or sizes as the main considerations. There are those who would readily answer “battery life”. What use is an ultra small notebook that can’t even last for a couple of hours without an electrical outlet? But a netbook can. How does a couple of days sound? An MSI model has been reported to have clocked 25 hours of continuous use. So if you put in sleeping time into the equation, 2 days would definitely be achievable.

Cloud computing. Why look for a notebook with the full MS Office Suite when all you really need is a browser to work on a word processor, spreadsheet, or a presentation? Ever heard of Google Docs or Zoho or Office Live Mesh? If not, you better start googling for those terms. Cloud computing is the future of computing. With cloud computing, not only will your files be stored on the Internet but also the applications that will allow you to create and modify them. So really, if all you ever use is MS Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, it’s time to ditch your current hardware because you really don’t need heavy specs for those kinds of apps anymore.Yes, read our lips – all you would need is a browser (yup, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.) … and you only need a netbook to run that.

More suitable for Web-based tasks. More and more people are turning to the Internet for work and once they land on a job (writing, data-entry, some programming tasks), all their basic necessities are found on the Web. So what’s the basic requirement? That’s right … a Web browser. Need I say more?

There are a few other reasons netbooks are increasing being picked over notebooks – However, one huge point to keep in mind is that netbooks are sometimes people’s 2nd or 3rd computers. So when Netbooks aren’t beating out Notebooks on portability and price, they’re getting added on in addition to a notebook purchase.
