There’s little to be said about the new netbook but it’s supposed to come with a 10.1″ screen, 1GB of RAM and 320GB hard drive as well as Hyperthreading and a 400MHz embedded graphics core.

This will be Acer’s first Cedar Trail netbook.

The Entourage Pocket Edge is a dual-screen eBook reader and Android tablet in one machine that you can use to, well, read ebooks, surf the net and run Android apps. It looks like a netbook, only with another screen instead of a keyboard.

It’s actually a smaller version of the Edge reader which has two 10″ screens. The Pocket Edge comes with a 6″ E-Ink touchscreen display and a 7″ 800 x 480 pixel LCD.

Here are the machine’s tech specs:

4GB of storage

2MP camera

802.11b/g/ WiFi

microSD card slot

12 hours of battery life

The 12 hours of battery life is questionable because while the E-Ink screen doesn’t consume a lot of power, the LCD screen will. Rule of thumb is to subtract 2 hours from manufacturer’s claim, and you get the average battery life. But of course that will also depend on how you use it. I suspect with WiFi constantly on, that would diminish battery life faster.

Amazon is taking pre-orders for the Pocket Edge for $399.99. Word on a 3G version from Verizon is also spreading but we don’t have an update on that yet.

If you love attention and pastels, you’ll love the Aspire One Happy. With the exception of the Ferrari One netbook, nothing shouts “Look at me!” like this latest Aspire One netbook from Acer. This 10.1-inch netbook comes in flashy pastel colors that will definitely get you noticed!

If you like the Aspire One Happy netbook’s specifications but find the colors on this netbook model too loud for your taste, better get a dual-core Aspire One D255 instead. After all, the AOHAPPY is just a dual-core AOD255 with a more exciting packaging.

[Note: The Aspire One D255 netbook model has 23 versions. Only 5 of them come with a dual-core processor.]

Aspire One Happy versus the Dual-Core Aspire One D255

The Aspire One Happy is a dual-core Aspire One D255 made younger, more vibrant, more fun, and – with a name like Happy – more whimsical. To be precise, the Aspire One Happy netbook is simply the AOD255-1134 (red), the AOD255-1203 (aquamarine), the AOD255-1268 (black), the AOD255-1549 (black), and the AOD255-1625 (brown) in Candy Pink, Lavender Purple and Lime Green.

[Note: The Aspire One Happy actually comes in 4 colors: Candy Pink, Lavender Purple, Lime Green, and Hawaii Blue. In the US, however, only the first 3 are available at the time of writing.]

[Additional Note: Unless otherwise specified, this article discusses only US Acer netbook releases. Specifications of any single Acer netbook model may vary from country to country.]

If you look at the specifications of the Aspire One Happy netbook and compare them to the specifications of the dual-core Aspire One D255 netbook versions (i.e. the 5 AOD255 versions specified earlier), you will realize that they are almost identical. For one, they have the following major specifications in common:

dual-core Intel Atom N550 processor

1GB DDR3 RAM

250GB hard drive

Windows 7 Starter OS

Both the Aspire One Happy and the Aspire One D255, moreover, weigh less than 3lbs, are less than 1″ thin and have a rated battery life of 8 hours. Like the AOD255, moreover, the AOHAPPY also doesn’t have built-in 3G and Bluetooth connectivity.

Of course, there are some differences between the AOHAPPY and the dual-core AOD255 aside from color and styling. These differences are pretty minor, however, and they are:

Card Reader: The Aspire One D255’s card slot has support for MultiMediaCard and Secure Digital (SD) card plus, with the use of an optional adapter, miniSD and microSD. Aspire One Happy’s card slot, on the other hand, has support for only 2 card types: MultiMediaCard and Secure Digital (SD) card.

Included Software: The Aspire One Happy has fewer preloaded software than the Aspire One D255. Android InstantOn is one of the programs missing in the Aspire One Happy (note that AOHAPPY netbooks released in other countries – e.g. Indonesia – do have Android InstantOn). The AOHAPPY does come preloaded with the WildTangent Games App, software you won’t find in the AOD255.

[Note: It is obvious from this extra software, from the color choices and from Acer’s own marketing spin that the Aspire One Happy is meant to appeal to teens, school-age kids or any young person who loves bright, pastel colors and uses a netbook mainly for social networking, working on school projects and playing online games.]

The Aspire One Happy Netbooks Guide and Comparison Chart

Ready to start shopping for an Aspire One Happy netbook? Use this guide to compare the different versions of the Aspire One Happy netbook model in the US.

Notes on using this guide:

Use Section I to familiarize yourself with the different versions of the Aspire One Happy.

Use Section II to check if Aspire One Happy has all of the basic specifications you want in a netbook.

Use Section III to learn the differences among Aspire One Happy versions.

Use Section IV to compare the different Aspire One Happy versions.

I. The Different Acer Aspire One Happy Netbook Versions

There are 3 Acer Aspire One Happy netbook versions in the US:

AOHAPPY-1101

AOHAPPY-1225

AOHAPPY-1515

II. Summary of Similarities among Acer Aspire One Happy Netbook Versions

The following are the basic specifications that all Aspire One Happy netbooks in the US have in common:

Display: 10.1-inch (1024 x 600) 200-nitere TFT LCD
Processor: Intel Atom Processor N550
Operating System: Windows 7 Starter
Chipset: Mobile Intel NM10 Express
Graphics: Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150
RAM: 1GB DDR3 1066 SDRAM
Storage: 250GB hard drive
WLAN: 802.11 b/g/n
LAN: 10/100 Mb
Bluetooth: None
Webcam: 1.3 MP
Features: BIOS password, dual display support, MiniGo AC adapter, integrated stereo speakers, integrated digital mic, multi-gesture touchpad, Energy Star Certification, 93% of standard notebook keyboard size
USB Ports: 3 USB 2.0 ports
Card Reader: 2-in-1 card reader [MultiMediaCard, Secure Digital (SD) card]
Other Jacks / Ports: VGA port, headphone/speaker/line-out jack, microphone jack, Ethernet LAN port, Kensington lock slot
Battery: 6-cell Li-ion battery with up to 8 hours of battery life
Dimensions: 10.2 x 7.3 x 0.9 inches, 2.8 lb
Acer warranty: 1-year limited warranty

III. Summary of Differences among Acer Aspire One Happy Netbook Versions

The 3 Aspire One Happy netbook versions vary only on one feature:

Color: An Aspire One Happy netbook (at least in the US) can be Lavender Purple, Candy Pink and Lime Green.

IV. Acer Aspire One Happy Netbooks Comparison Chart

Since the 3 Aspire One Happy netbook versions vary only by color, you don’t really need a comparison chart to make your final version selection. All you have to do is decide which color you want and you should be all set.

For the sake of consistency, however, I am still including the Aspire One Happy netbooks comparison chart:

At the moment, there are 23 versions of the Aspire One D255 netbook in the United States. Read on to learn about the similarities and the differences among these AOD255 versions. After reading this article, you should find it easy to choose the specific Acer AOD255 version to buy.

Acer AOD255 Defining Feature: Dual-Core Intel Atom Processor

If you are looking for a faster and more responsive Acer Aspire One netbook, the Aspire One D255 (or, to be precise, some versions of the AOD255) may be just what you’re looking for.

The AOD255 has dual-core versions. Specifically, 5 of the 23 AOD255 netbook versions have the Intel Atom N550 dual-core processor – and this makes a huge difference in netbook performance.

The Intel Atom N550 processor has 2 cores and can handle 4 threads simultaneously. In contrast, the other Intel Atom N-series processors currently out in the market – the N450, the N455, the N470, and the N475 – have only 1 core. Like the N550, these processors have hyperthreading abilities; however, they can handle only 2 threads simultaneously.

What does this mean to you – the netbook user? If you want a faster and more responsive netbook, you should go for a netbook with an Intel Atom N550 processor. Ergo, you should get any one of the Aspire One D255 netbook versions that have the Intel Atom N550 processor.

Other Features of the Aspire One D255

The AOD255 has the standard features of the newer Acer netbooks. It has the multi-gesture touchpad, the 84-key keyboard that is 93% the size of a standard notebook keyboard and the MiniGo AC Adapter that is 34% lighter than standard adapters. It is also less than 1” thin and weighs less than 3lb.

Features an Acer AOD255 Netbook Doesn’t Have

It’s worth noting that Aspire One D255 netbooks in the US don’t have built-in Bluetooth and onboard 3G modem. This is easily solved, however. If you need Bluetooth and 3G connectivity, you can buy a Bluetooth dongle and an external 3G modem, respectively.

The AOD255 also doesn’t have the following features:

Gigabit LAN

HD Audio support

There’s no easy remedy for the above-listed lacking features so if these are important, consider buying a different Acer netbook model – say, an Aspire One netbook with an AMD Athlon K125 processor (e.g. Aspire One 521 and Aspire One 721).

III. Summary of Differences among Acer Aspire One D255 Netbook Versions

The following are the specifications on which the Aspire One D255 netbook versions vary:

Processor: All AOD255 netbook versions are on the (formerly known as) Pineview platform; 5 have the Intel Atom N550 (1MB L2 cache, 1.5GHz) dual-core processor, while 18 have the Intel Atom N450 (512KB L2 cache, 1.66GHz) single-core processor.
Operating System: Among all Acer AOD255 netbook versions, 18 have a Windows 7 Starter operating system, while 5 have a Windows XP Home Edition (SP3) operating system.
RAM: All Aspire One D255 netbooks come with 1GB RAM onboard. The Acer AOD255 netbooks that have the Intel Atom N550 processor come with 1GB DDR3 1066 SDRAM, while the versions that have the Intel Atom N450 processor come with 1GB DDR2 667 SDRAM.

*Important note: According to the US Acer support website (at the time of writing), the RAM on Windows XP systems are “user upgradeable” to 2GB by changing the RAM already onboard with a 2GB memory module. From this statement, you can infer two things:

Acer is silent on the matter of upgrading the RAM on AOD255 netbooks that come with the Windows 7 operating system, and

If you must upgrade your RAM, you have to do it yourself (or ask someone else to do it for you).

It must be added that Acer’s support documents for the AOD255 explicitly state that systems running on the Windows 7 Starter OS can have a maximum of only 1GB RAM, while systems running on the Windows XP OS can have a maximum of 2GB RAM. Note that the system memory module must be DDR3 for AOD255 netbooks with the Intel Atom N550 processor and DDR2 for those with the Intel Atom N450 processor.

Storage: An Acer AOD255 netbook may have 250-GB or 160-GB hard drive; 11 versions have a 250-GB hard drive, while 12 have a 160-GB hard drive.
Battery: An Acer AOD255 netbook can have a 6-cell, 4400mAh battery that provides up to 8 hours of battery life or a 3-cell, 4400mAh battery that provides up to 4 hours of battery life.
Acer warranty: Only 1 AOD255 netbook version comes with a 2-year Acer limited warranty; the rest of the AOD255 versions have 1-year Acer limited warranty.
Color: Ruby Red, Aquamarine, Diamond Black, Sandstone Brown

The Aspire One D260 (simply known as the AOD260) is another 10.1-inch netbook from Acer. This Acer netbook is for you if you’re looking for a 10.1-inch Aspire One that looks different from other Aspire Ones.

The AOD260: If Looks Matter

In the looks department, the Aspire One D260 is a standout (but only relative to other Aspire Ones; Ferrari One netbooks still have the best looks in the Acer netbook brood).

The AOD260 has a flake pattern on the cover, on the rear (what we’d normally call the base), on the palm rest, and on the touchpad. Actually, the flake pattern is everywhere on the inside of the netbook (except the keyboard). It’s even on the mirror strip on the base.

Oh, and did I mention it has a mirror strip? Perhaps Acer thought the world could use a netbook that doubles up as a vanity mirror. It could also be that the Acer design team wanted a netbook that will surely catch the eye. The AOD260 definitely does that. Just turn the mirror strip towards the light and wait for the eyes of whoever’s looking go blind. :-P

Acer AOD260 pink netbook

The Aspire One D260 also has a soft matte coating instead of the typical glossy coating found in other Aspire Ones. The AOD260, therefore, has a soft gleam rather than a high gloss. Of course, the AOD260 still shines; remember the rear mirror strip? ;-)

Yes, indeed, the Aspire One has a unique style that sets it apart from other Aspire One netbooks. If netbook looks are your priority, then you’d love the Aspire One D260.

Caveat: Although Acer went out of its way to ensure that the AOD260 not look like a standard Aspire One, this doesn’t mean it’s not recognizable as such. In fact, the opposite is true; anybody looking at an AOD260 netbook won’t even have to guess the netbook’s make and manufacturer. The large Aspire One and Acer logos on the cover ensure that no one could mistake the AOD260 for, say, an Asus netbook. :)

The Aspire One D260: More than Skin Deep?

Underneath the glitz and the glam of the AOD260 beats the heart of a rather ordinary Aspire One netbook. The Aspire One D260’s specifications don’t really stand out among the rest of the Aspire One netbooks.

AOD260 versus AOD250: The AOD260 is much like an AOD250 with a bigger keyboard, a longer battery life (relatively speaking), improved portability (slightly thinner and lighter plus the smaller adapter), and an upgraded processor.

The AOD260 is a Pineview netbook (a.k.a. Pine Trail netbook), and in that respect, it is better than the AOD250. Nevertheless, it loses out to the AOD250 when it comes to Bluetooth connectivity; while the Aspire One D250 has built-in Bluetooth, the Aspire One D260 (at least the versions available in the US) has no Bluetooth onboard.

Of course, the newer AOD260 beats the older AOD250 when it comes to WLAN connectivity; the AOD250 has the basic 802.11 b/g WLAN (a few versions have 802.11 b/g/Draft-N), while all AOD260 netbooks have 802.11 b/g/n WLAN.

AOD260 versus AO532h: The Aspire One 532h and the Aspire One D260 are both Pineview netbooks. Consequently, the AOD260 and the AO532h have pretty much the same battery life – around 4 hours with a 3-cell battery and around 8 hours with a 6-cell battery.

The Aspire One D260 is like an Aspire One 532h with better webcam resolution. However, it lacks the AO532h’s high-definition audio support.

AOD260 versus AOD533: An Aspire One 533 netbook could have either an Intel Atom N455 or an Intel Atom N475 processor, whereas the Aspire One D260 has the Aspire One N450 processor (except one version that has the N475 Atom processor). Both netbook models are on the Pineview platform; thus, they have basically the same battery life.

The AOD260 is like an AO533 without the built-in Bluetooth connectivity (Bluetooth v3.0 HS is on select versions of the AO533), the DDR3 SDRAM (only the N475 AOD260 netbook version has DDR3 SDRAM) and the anti-slip touchpad.

AOD260 versus AO521: At first glance, the Aspire One D260 also looks like a doppelganger of the Aspire One 521. Although these two netbooks have different specifications (the AO521 is on the AMD platform, for one), they both have a (similar but not identical) flake pattern on the cover. Admittedly, though, the AOD260 looks much more stylish than the AO521.

The Verdict: How the Aspire One D260 Measures Up with other Aspire Ones

All of above comparisons just prove one thing. The Aspire One D260 looks special but has more or less the same specs as the rest of the Aspire Ones. It does have the improvements found in the newer Aspire One models. That is to say, it is thin, it is light, and it comes with the conveniently small Acer MiniGo Adapter. It also has a nearly full-size keyboard, a Kensington lock slot, BIOS password protection, and Energy Star Certification.

Nevertheless, the AOD260 doesn’t have the advanced features found in other newer Acer netbooks. If you want extras like HD video capability, HDMI video outputting, the newest Bluetooth version, and Gigabit LAN, there are much better Aspire One netbooks out there.

If you want smooth HD video streaming, HDMI outputting to HD-capable displays and Gigabit LAN connectivity, get an AO521 or an AO721. If you want high-speed Bluetooth v3.0, get an AO521 or an AO533 (select versions only).

If you’re set on an Aspire One D260 but are unsure about which AOD260 version to buy, read on. This AOD260 netbooks comparison section will help you choose the best netbook version from amongst those available in the US.

On using this AOD260 netbooks comparison guide:

Use Section I to familiarize yourself with all Aspire One D260 netbook versions in the US.

Use Section II to verify that the AOD260 netbook model does have all of the specifications you want in a netbook.

Use Section III to learn the differences among the AOD260 netbook versions and to identify your preferred specs.

On a blank piece of paper, write down the specifications on which the AOD260 versions vary (e.g. color, processor, RAM type, storage capacity, etc.) according to your preferred order. For instance, if the processor is your main deciding factor, put processor on top of the list.

Beside each specification, write down your preferred option. For instance, the AOD260 netbook is available in 4 colors: black, charcoal, pink, aquamarine, and purple. If you want a pink netbook, write “pink” beside the specification, “color.”

This step will make choosing a netbook much easier. All you have to do is browse through the following section (the netbooks comparison chart) and pick the netbook with your preferred specifications. To use the earlier example, if you really want a pink netbook, all you’ll have to do is choose among all the pink netbooks in the netbooks comparison chart. You can then disregard other netbook versions that don’t have your preferred color.

Use Section IV to make your final version selection. All you have to do at this point is choose the netbook that has all or most of your preferred specifications (as indicated in the list you made in step 3).

III. Summary of Differences among Acer Aspire One D260 Netbook Versions

The following are the specifications on which the 13 versions of the AOD260 vary:

Processor: An AOD260 can have the Intel Atom N450 processor or the Intel Atom N475 processor. Among the 13 Aspire One D260 versions, 12 have the Intel Atom N450 (512KB L2 cache, 1.66GHz) processor. Only 1 has the Intel Atom N475 (512KB L2 cache, 1.83GHz) processor.
Operating System: An AOD260 ships with either a Windows 7 Starter or a Windows XP Home Edition operating system. Among the 13 AOD260 netbook versions, 12 have the Windows 7 Starter operating system. Only 1 has the Windows XP Home Edition OS.
RAM: All Aspire One D260 netbooks in the US have 1GB RAM capacity. Among the 13 AOD260 versions, 12 have DDR2 667 SDRAM, while 1 has DDR3 SDRAM.
Storage: An Acer Aspire One D260 netbook can have either a 160GB or a 250GB hard drive. Seven of the 13 versions have a 160GB hard drive, while the remaining 6 have a 250GB hard drive.
Battery: The AOD260 can have a 3-cell battery or a 6-cell battery. The 3-cell (4400mAh) battery provides an estimated unplugged life of 4 hours. The 6-cell (4400mAh) battery provides an estimated unplugged life of 8 hours. Among the 13 AOD260 versions, 6 have the 3-cell battery, while 7 have the 6-cell battery.
Color: There are 5 color options in the US: Pink, Aquamarine, Black, Charcoal, and Purple.

*Important note on RAM upgrades: In the Acer Support website, Acer makes the following statement:

While the Aspire One AOD260 series supports a total of 2GB of DDR2 or DDR3 RAM (depending on system CPU and configuration), due to the design of the netbook the RAM on the Aspire One AOD260 series is not replaceable and Acer does not support upgrading or replacing the RAM.

In other words, if you want to upgrade your AOD260 netbook’s RAM to its full capacity of 2GB, you can’t expect any form of assistance from Acer. You’re pretty much on your own, and you’ll have to do the RAM upgrading yourself – at the risk, of course, of potentially nullifying your warranty.

Just like the rest of the newer 10.1-inch netbook models (e.g. AO532h, AO533 and AOD260) the AO521′s keyboard is 93% of the standard keyboard size of notebook computers.

The Aspire One 521 stands out because it combines the defining features of the 11.6-inch netbook, AO721, and the 10.1-inch netbook, AO533. If you’re looking for a notebook that has the characteristics of an Aspire One 721 and the characteristics of an Aspire One 533, then you should really get the Aspire One 521.

Why Choose the Aspire One 521?

Given a choice among all Aspire One netbooks, why should you choose the AO521?

You love streaming videos – especially HD videos

Enjoy watching HD videos with the 10.1-inch AO521. The Aspire One 521 has all the HD video viewing advantages of the Aspire One 721.

First, it has the ATI Radeon HD 4225 graphics chip (with 384 MB of dedicated system memory). Just like the AO721, the Aspire One 521 is capable of smooth HD Video streaming.

Not only that, the Aspire One 521 also has an HDMI port for outputting HD videos to external displays. If you find the 10.1-inch screen too small, simply connect your netbook to your HDTV with an HDMI cable. Now you can watch your HD video on a larger screen without any loss in video quality.

You can also share your HD videos with others. Watch the video on your netbook and let others watch the same video on your HDTV or on a projector screen with AO521’s dual/simultaneous display capability.

You often keep multiple applications and windows open

The Aspire One 521 is also a good option if you love to multi-task. The AMD platform and the ATI Radeon 4225 graphics chip ensures that you can stream videos and use other visually intense applications without suffering from system freeze-ups or slow-downs.

Just like the AO721 and the AO533, moreover, the AO521 also uses the latest SDRAM technology – DDR3, which has twice the data transfer rate of DDR2. This makes the Aspire One 521 really fast and responsive.

You are used to Bluetooth file sharing

If you have many devices that you connect to your netbook through Bluetooth, you’ll love the AO521.

Like the Aspire One 533, the Aspire One 521 has the latest in Bluetooth technology – Bluetooth 3.0 or Bluetooth High Speed Technology. This makes bulk file sharing between your netbook and another Bluetooth-capable device fast and easy.

You bring your netbook everywhere

If you’re used to bringing your mobile computer with you everywhere, then the Aspire One 521 is a great option. Like the AO533, it comes with Acer’s MiniGo AC Adapter which weighs 34% lighter than standard AC adapters. It also has more or less the same dimensions as the AO533, so it should be easy to lug around.

Notes: There are Acer Aspire One 521 versions that are capable of 3G connectivity. However, the AO521 versions currently available in the US don’t have this capability. Furthermore, the AO521 versions in the US come with a battery life of 5.5 hours, but as per Acer’s support website, 7.5 hours of battery life is possible with the AO521’s high-capacity, 6-cell, 5600 mAh battery. Finally, according to the specs on the Acer support website, the AO521 netbook has 160GB versions. In the US, however, only AO521 with the 250GB hard drive is available.

The Acer Aspire One 533 is a 10.1-inch netbook just like the Aspire One D260, Aspire One D250, Aspire One D150, Aspire One 531h, Aspire One P531h, Aspire One 532h, and Aspire One 521.

In the US, the AO533 netbook model currently has 6 different versions, all of which sport an 84-key keyboard that’s 93% the size of standard notebook computer keyboards. The 93% of standard keyboard size is a feature shared by the newer 10.1-inch Acer netbook models such as the AO532h, the AO521 and the AOD260. The rest of the 10.1-inch Aspire Ones have a smaller keyboard at 89% the standard size.

Aspire One 533: Defining Features

What are the things that set the Aspire One 533 apart from other 10.1-inch Acer netbooks?

Acer Aspire One 533 (AO533) Glossy Red Netbook

Bluetooth v3.0 High Speed: That’s right! The latest iteration of the Bluetooth wireless file sharing technology (i.e. Bluetooth 3.0 or Bluetooth High Speed Technology) is on selected versions of the Aspire One 533. If you want this, get the AO533-23096 (red netbook) or the AO533-23227 (black netbook).

Bluetooth v3.0 High Speed provides faster data transfer rates than Bluetooth v2.0 but is backward compatible with Bluetooth v2.0 and earlier versions. This means fast and effortless sharing of large files between devices.

With the AO533, you can easily synchronize bulk music files between your netbook and your music player, download bulk image files from your netbook to your printer, and send large video files from your netbook to your phone.

The AO533 is particularly perfect if you have other Bluetooth v3.0 devices with which your netbook can interface.

MiniGo Acer Adapter: This lightweight (34% lighter than standard), 40-watt AC adapter makes the AO533 a good option for frequent travelers.

DDR3 SDRAM: DDR3 SDRAM has a faster data transfer rate than DDR2 SDRAM (which most other Aspire One netbooks have).

Anti-Slip Touchpad: Just like the Aspire One 532h, the touchpad on the Aspire One 533 has a raised microbead texture that guides the finger for easier, no-slip navigation.

Sleek Look: The Aspire One 533 looks sleek. It has an attractive, glossy cover but a matte finish that prevents fingerprint smudges and minimizes the appearance of scratches. It also has a chrome rim as well as chrome accents on the touchpad.

AO533 Features NOT Available in Acer USA’s AO533 Netbooks

There are AO533 netbooks with 3G connectivity. However, the 6 versions available in the US (as per the US Acer website at the time of writing) don’t have this capability.

There are also Aspire One 533 netbooks that have 10 hours of battery life. Currently, however, the AO533 netbooks in the US all come with a 4400 mAh 6-cell battery that provides only up to 8 hours of battery life. If you can get the 5600 mAh, 6-cell, high-capacity battery for the AO533, however, you may be able to get as much as 10 hours of portable performance on your AO533.

Finally, AO533 netbooks actually have 3 color options: glossy black, glossy red and glossy white. In the US, however, only the black and red netbooks are available at present.

The Aspire One 533 Netbooks Guide and Comparison Chart

On using this guide:

Use Section I to learn the names of the different versions of the Aspire One 533 model.

Use Section II to ensure that the Aspire One 533 netbook has all the specifications that you want or need.

Use Section III to learn the differences among the available versions. Use this section, too, to create a list of the specifications you prefer.

Use Section IV to pick the netbook version that has the specifications you chose in the earlier step.

I. The Different Acer Aspire One 533 Netbook Versions

As mentioned earlier, Acer USA distributes 6 different versions of the Aspire One 533. They are the following:

Aspire One 533-13531

The Aspire One 721 is the newest 11.6-inch netbook from Acer USA. It is Acer’s third notebook-netbook (i.e. netbook that looks like a notebook). The other 11.6-inch Acer netbooks are the Aspire One 751h and the Ferrari One 200.

And it’s not just screen size that the Aspire One 721 shares with the Ferrari One 200 and the Aspire One 751h. The AO721 is also very slim at 1-inch high and also has a full-size keyboard. However, the 6-cell AO721 is lighter by 0.3 lb than the 6-cell FO200 but heavier by 0.03 lb than the 6-cell AO751h.

The HD Difference

Is the Aspire One 721 for you? It depends. If you need a netbook for basic office work and internet connectivity, are fond of streaming HD videos from the internet and want to watch these HD videos using your HDTV, then the Aspire One 721 is a perfect fit.

Aside from the standard specifications of Aspire One netbooks, the AO721 has a clear advantage over other Aspire One netbooks when it comes to HD video streaming and HD video outputting.

Smooth HD video streaming:

The Aspire One 721 offers smooth, high-definition video streaming. It has an integrated ATI Radeon HD 4225 graphics chip with 384 MB dedicated system memory. This gives the AO721 its superior HD video playback performance.

HD Video Outputting:

Apart from a VGA port for outputting video to external displays (e.g. your TV), an HDMI port is also available. This gives you the ability to output HD video to your HDTV without loss in video quality. To watch HD videos from streaming websites on your HDTV or any other HD-capable display, simply use an HDMI cable to output the video from your AO721.

Simultaneous Display:

AO721 has simultaneous display support. If you want to share a video you’re watching to a large group of people, output the video to an HDTV (using the HDMI port), to a projector (through the VGA port then use a projector screen) or to a regular TV monitor (through the VGA port), and the video will be simultaneously displayed on the external display and on your netbook’s display.

The RAM

Yet another thing that sets the Aspire One 721 apart from other Acer netbooks is DDR3 SDRAM interface. The DDR3 SDRAM transfers data at twice the data transfer rate of the DDR2 SDRAM, the typical interface used in earlier Acer netbooks.

Acer Aspire One 721-3574

No Bluetooth and No Color Choices

Unfortunately, the Aspire One 721 does not have integrated Bluetooth connectivity. Resolving this is just an easy matter of buying a Bluetooth dongle, however.

On the other hand, if you don’t really want a black netbook, then the AO721 is just not for you. The Aspire One 721 gives you a choice between mesh-black and mesh-black. :)

The Aspire One 721 11.6-inch Netbooks Guide and Comparison Chart

I. The Different Acer Aspire One 721 Netbook Versions

Acer’s Aspire One 721 comes in 2 versions. This is good news if you know you want an AO721 netbook but don’t want to be presented with too many options. This is bad news if the 2 available versions don’t have exactly the specs you have in mind.

In any case, the following are the 2 different AO721 versions:

Aspire One 721-3070

Aspire One 721-3574

II. Summary of Similarities among Acer Aspire One 721 Netbook Versions

III. Summary of Differences among Acer Aspire One 721 Netbook Versions

The two AO721 versions are virtually identical. They only differ on one point, and that is:

Storage: The Aspire One 721-3070 has a 160-GB hard drive, while the Aspire One 721-3574 has a bigger storage capacity at 250 GB.

IV. Acer Aspire One 721 Netbooks Comparison Chart

We don’t really need a comparison chart for the AO721. Picking your version is just a matter of deciding whether you need a 160-GB or a 250-GB hard drive – but if you insist, here it is:

The 10.1-inch Aspire One 532h is Acer’s very own Pineview (a.k.a Pine Trail) netbook. That is, it has an Intel Atom N450 processor, which belongs to the Pineview or Pine Trail class of Intel Atom processors. Most other Aspire One netbooks have an Intel Atom N270 or an Intel Atom N280 processor. Both the N270 and the N280 belong to the Intel Atom Diamondville family of processors.

Is it another 10-inch Aspire One copycat?

Most people would probably agree that Acer is not one of the most creative netbook manufacturers when it comes to netbook design. Acer netbooks, for the most part and with the exception of the Ferrari One brand, look the same. This begs the question: is the Aspire One 532h another indistinguishable 10-inch netbook in Acer’s Aspire One line?

The answer is yes. Physically, the Aspire One 532h netbook looks pretty much the same as other Aspire One netbooks, especially the 10-inch models (think Aspire One D250, D150, 531h, and P531h). Of course, there are minor differences.

The Aspire One 532h netbook from Acer has a metallic-looking cover, for one, and this really catches the eyes. The touchpad has raised dots to guide your fingers so you can do your finger scrolling, flipping, rotating, and pinching with greater ease.

The Aspire One 532h netbook's anti-slip touchpad

The keyboard also got an upgrade; it is 93% of standard, which is larger than the 89% of standard that is normal for other 10.1-inch Aspire One netbooks. Finally, the Aspire One 532h netbook is also quite thin (0.99 inch) and relatively light (2.48 lbs. or 2.8 lbs. depending on type of battery used).

This time, though, Acer did not just repackage an old product, tweak a few things, and sell it as a new netbook model. In fact, you could say Acer did the opposite. It took a new product and (for some reason known only to Acer) made it look like any other Aspire One netbook.

The “Core” Difference of the Acer Aspire One 532h

The Aspire One 532h as above-mentioned, has the Pineview N450 Intel Atom processor. This makes all the difference for this netbook.

Power advantage: The Intel Atom N450 processor is more power efficient than the N270 and the N280. The N450 has a system-on-a-chip (SOC) design with the graphics processor and memory controller integrated in the same chip. The integrated Mobile Intel NM10 Express Chipset on the N450, moreover, consumes less power than the Intel 945GSE Express Chipset, the chipset used in most other Aspire One netbooks.

Overall, the Aspire One 532h lasts longer than other Aspire One netbooks. Specifically, a 6-cell Aspire One 532h netbook can have a battery life of up to 10 hours. On the other hand, other Aspire One netbooks with comparable battery configurations typically have only around 6 to 7 hours of battery life.

Additionally, a 3-cell Aspire One 532h netbook can last up to 4 hours on full charge. In contrast, other 3-cell Aspire One netbooks typically last only from 2.5 to 3 hours on full charge.

Performance advantage: The Intel Atom N450 is a single-core processor with a 64-bit instruction architecture set, whereas the N270 and the N280 are single-core processors with a 32-bit instruction architecture set. This gives the Aspire One 532h a performance advantage over other Aspire One netbooks to date.

It must be noted, though, that this performance advantage is slight and subtle. The 62-bit IA processor on the AO532h does not make this netbook twice as fast as other Aspire Ones. For simple netbook applications (internet browsers, word processing, etc), you won’t even feel the advantage. You will, however, find it easier to use different applications simultaneously and to keep multiple internet browser tabs open.

If you’re using applications that require greater data storage (i.e. 64-bit integer applications), the performance advantage of the 64-bit IA processor in the AO532h will definitely make itself felt.

Important note: The AO532h netbook can give you significantly better performance than other Aspire One netbooks if you successfully manage to upgrade this system’s RAM from 1GB to 2GB. The 64-bit architecture of the Intel Atom N450 will give you better performance by making more memory available for computations, but you’ll benefit from this only if you have a bigger RAM.

The Price Advantage

The owners of Aspire One 532h netbooks are raving about the low price of this netbook. Just think: for more or less $300, you get a Pineview netbook that will last up to 10 hours on the road and has 64-bit-application support. Cool, huh?

So, do you want an Aspire One 532h? Know that there are 22 different versions of this netbook in the US. To find out which one you should get, use the Quick Selection Guide section or the Aspire One 532h netbooks guide and comparison chart.
