We were pretty happy with the Lenovo S10-3. There are definitely better netbooks out there but the S10-3 is pretty okay on its own.

The Lenovo S10-3t is the convertible version of the Lenovo S10-3. It has multi-touch capabilities and converts into a tablet. At a time when the iPad is making waves, will a convertible netbook be able to compete? And if so, will the Lenovo S10-3t be THAT netbook?

Rating: 5 out of 7 stars

Features and Drawbacks

Good design – The S10-3t is one good-looking netbook. The retro pattern is fairly attractive and the netbook is also quite sturdy. It’s also comfortable to hold as a tablet.

Roomy keyboard, tiny but dotted touchpad – The roomy keyboard makes it comfy to type on, and you can adjust quickly if you came from a full keyboard. The touch keyboard on the tablet is okay from Windows 7, but it’s less reliable to type on. It’s accurate, but you’re going to have to be very patient waiting for it to catch up to you if you’re fast. Th touchpad is tiny and has integrated buttons, but while it’s tiny, it’s wide. The dotted surface also helps you find it even without looking.

A-Ok screen and cool apps – It comes with a 10.1″ capacitive touchscreen which supports multitouch gesture. It works okay with Windows 7, but it also comes with a bunch of apps and software that can help give you a great touchscreen experience, such as the NaturalTouch software which helps you access a lot of programs by touch. It also comes with other apps like Notes, an app for eBooks, Splashtop instant-on, DirectShare , VeriFace, and OneKey Rescue System. Don’t expect apps in the level of the iPad, though. Compared to that, it’s pretty paltry, but kinda functional. The non-touchscreen… uh, screen is decent, wit clear, vibrant colors.

Kinda slow performance – With the new Intel Atom N470 processor and 2GB RAM, you expect the netbook to work wonders… or at least, work faster than a last-gen netbook. Instead, it’s a fraction slower, specially if you’re using the touchscreen. If you’re expecting to get instant action as soon as you touch an icon, you’re not going to get it.

Ordinary battery performance – An 8-cell battery lasts for 7 hours. That’s good, but with netbooks running for 11 hours on a single charge, 7 hours isn’t that impressive any more. Good, but not impressive.

Rating – 5/7

Value for Money – 1
Speed and Performance – 0.5
Screen – 0.5
Keyboard – 1
Portability & Battery Life – 0.5
Looks and Design – 1
Extensibility & connectivity – 0.5

Bottomline
We had high hopes for the Lenovo S10-3t, but sadly, it didn’t live up to our expectations. Plus points is that it’s portable, has an okay battery and is good as a netbook, but since we’re scoring it as a convertible tablet, then it’s slow ways and less than excellent touchscreen performance made it less than what it should be.

Lenovo has fixed some of the S10-2’s problems in their Lenovo S10-3, but are those improvements enough to make the netbook one of the better choices in the netbook market? What changes did Lenovo do to improve on their S series netbooks? Well, there’s a better keyboard, a good instant-on software and software bundle, and good audio. But is it worth its $349.99 price?

Rating: 6 out of 7 stars

Features and Drawbacks

Slicker design. – The new Lenovo no longer has the battery extending from the back of the netbook which means cleaner lines. It is also narrower than the S10-2 at 10.6″ x 6.6″ x 1.4″, and a teeny tiny bit lighter, at 2.6 lbs., than your average netbook. It also has a checkered pattern on the lid which makes it perfect for hiding smudges. The inside looks like brushed metal. The display has a glossy finish with great contrast.

Excellent keyboard; meh touchpad. – The keyboard extends from one end of the chassis to the next in a spacious design. It’s also laid down, island-style, with snappy and responsive keys. The buttons are integrated on the wide touchpad, and isn’t as easy to use at the keyboard itself. Although capable of multitouch gestures, the buttons are hard to use. You’d be better of using a mouse.

Better than average speakers. – Netbooks, in general, doesn’t have great speakers but the Lenovo S10-3 does. It has great volume without sacrificing clarity, and is definitely better than your average netbook.

Great software bundle. – It comes with SplashTop instant-on OS which features icons at the bottom of the screen for email, Facebook, Twitter, Skype, YouTube, etc. You can customize these icons too. There’s an icon for Amazon, CNN down to the Weather Channel. It also comes with some utility software specifically from Lenovo such as DirectShare which allows you to sync your files on the computer to a USB drive; ReadyComm 5 which lets you connect to WiFi spots and Maplife which is powered by Bing.

Can handle your everyday netbook needs. – Score-wise, the Lenovo S10-3 did not perform as well as other netbooks in various netbook tests, but it can perform your basic everyday computing needs. But if you look at it, the Asus Eee PC 1001P which has the same specs, scored higher in various netbook tests, AND it’s cheaper. Also, the Asus netbook which has the same 6-cell battery lasted almost eight and a half hours on a single charge, while the Lenovo S10-3 lasted an hour and a half less.

Rating – 6/7

Value for Money – 0.5
Speed and Performance – 1
Screen – 1
Keyboard – 1
Portability & Battery Life – 0.5
Looks and Design – 1
Extensibility & connectivity – 1

Technical Specifications

Intel Atom CPU Speed N450(1.66GHz) CPU L2 Cache 512KB

1GB 204-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM Memory

250GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)

802.11 b/g/n

10.1″ 1024×600 LED Display (16:9)

Intel GMA 3150 Graphics

Windows 7 Starter

6 cell Lithium Ion Battery with up to 7 hours battery life

Bottomline
There’ are better netbooks than the Lenovo S10-3. Some with better battery life for a few bucks less. But if you want an attractive keyboard, great speakers, and a slickly-designed netbook and isn’t worried about the less than stellar battery life, then the Lenovo S10-3 is a good option to check out. The Lenovo S10-3 is available from Amazon.com for $349.99.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X100e is an ultraportable laptop with an 11.6″ 1366 x 768 pixel display, AMD Neo MV-40 single core CPU and AT Radeon HD 3200 graphics. A dual-core version has also been planned but looks like Lenovo is planning a 10.1″ version with 1280 x 720 pixel display, which will most likely come with an Intel Atom N450 processor.

The ThinkPad X100e gets high marks from reviewers for keyboard, design and build quality, but maybe because of the processor, gets a low score for battery life. A low-powered Atom processor will likely answer that problem.

Let’s just wait and see.

So far, you can get your Lenovo ThinkPad via Amazon.

The Lenovo S10-3t, Lenovo’s netbook convertible that swivels and and folds into a tablet is available for pre-order from Amazon for $500. Not a bad deal specs wise. Compare it to the Apple iPad which starts at $500 and goes up to $830 for the 3G-64GB version. And while you’re waiting in the pre-order period, keep an ear out for news about the cost of the Asus T10MT.

The guys at Netbook Choice recently posted an unboxing video on the Lenovo S10-3t netbook-convertible-tablet. Here’s a rundown of the netbook, and the video and tech specs are posted below.

Oddly (badly) shaped battery – the battery protrudes out of the back in a very unattractive noticeable way. Doesn’t look good, but it’s more functional to have it flat than to have it jut out under the netbook – especially since the S10-3t is also a tablet and you’ll be using the netbook both from the front and turned around 180 degrees.

8 cell battery – good for 10 hours

Sturdy build – the netbook itself, the display unit and the swivel all look very sturdy. So swivel away – in the right direction.

Plenty of buttons along the bezel - couldn’t figure out what exactly they do, but I’m sure they’re meant to help with the touch & tablet experience

Keyboard keys color scheme – the S10-3t looks cute with the function keys in black and the rest in white

Miniature Touchpad - don’t just shush this point with an “I can handle it.” The touchpad looks terribly tiny. On second thought, only shush this point if you know you’ll be using the S10-3t primarily as a tablet.

Glossy display – it looks really shiny in the video, in a bad, not outdoor-friendly way

I know that the Lenovo ThinkPad X100e has WiMAX, but it doesn’t say so in the Amazon pages. I might be mistaken, so lemme get back with you on that. As far as I know, it has a very comfortable keyboard but battery life is dismal compared to other netbooks, running for 4 to 5 hours.

Here are the technical specs of those available via Amazon:

11.6″ HD display 1366×768 resolution

1.60 GHz AMD Athlon processor

2048.00 MB RAM

250GB or 160GB HDD Serial ATA
