NPD Forecast: Netbook sales in 2009 exceed 2008 – by a LOT

We all knew that, but now there’s a study to show by how much Display Search, a subsidiary of the NPD Group devoted to technology related assessments, has just released their Q2 ‘09 Quarterly Notebook PC Shipping and Forecast Report. Among other things, the report included a forecast comparing netbook and notebook sales in 2008 and 2009.
Note: Regions were divided into: North America, Latin America, Greater China, Japan, EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific).
Here are the highlights of the forecast:
- By the end of 2009, one in every five PCs will be a netbook.
- Number of netbook sales will double in 2009. The two regions to see the top growth rates in comparison to 2008 are Greater China (an estimated 260% growth rate) and North America (137%).
- Notebook sales on the other hand remain completely stagnant.
- The combined market of netbooks + notebooks will increase by 11% in 2009 – netbooks are clearly the treason for the growth (and the reason notebook sales are stunted).
- While netbook sales grew in 2009 in every region, notebook sales increased only Greater China (22%), Latin America (20%) and Asia-Pacific (19%) — all rapidly growing regions with huge populations.
- The EMEA region will lead with the most netbooks with 7.3 million in 2008 and an estimated 13.3 by the end of 2009. North America will be next with 3.7 million sold in 2008 and 8.8 million by the end of 2009.
- 16.4 million netbooks were sold in 2008. Display Search estimates 32.7 million will be sold in 2009 (99% growth)
- 129.6M notebooks were sold in 2008. An estimated 129.5 sales will be sold in 2009 (-0.1% growth rate)
Here’s a great chart from GigaOm which lets you visualize the number of netbooks and notebooks sold by region:
