Norton Internet Security, Netbook Edition!
Have you heard of Norton Internet Security 2010: Netbook Edition? It’s a terrific move from Norton. Netbooks are used primarily for cloud computing and they operate mostly on Windows. With all that web surfing and downloading (note: lack of optical drive), internet security is a good concern.
The optimized version of Norton’s software caters specially to netbooks. It comes on a USB since netbooks don’t have optical drives, is specially designed to fit on a netbook and is programmed to go easy on the battery life of the portable devices. The package isn’t badly priced at $70 – for 1 year of protection for up to 3 netbooks. I don’t know who has three netbooks, but I’m sure you have friends you could split that with, making it less than $25 each.
Norton Features & Benefits
- Uses less memory, boots and scans faster
- Makes social networking safer (scans IMs for threats, protects passwords, prevents auto-downloads)
- Warns you about unsafe sites
- Is smart about battery – puts off non-critical tasks until it detects you’re plugged in. Nice feature to have!
- Also puts off tasks until the netbook is idle (helpful when you’re watching movies/streaming online video)
- Ups the security when you connect to public Wi-Fi networks
- Includes online features such as online back ups & parental controls for the kids
- Supports netbook displays (didn’t even realize this was an issue. I’m liking how thoughtful Norton is being!)
- Updates every 5-15 minutes (small pulse updates that won’t clog your system), ups the security when you’re online
- Includes Norton System Insight which explains the effect of past downloads on your netbook’s speed and performance.
- Includes 24×7 support via phone, email, live chat & online ‘knowledge base’
And everything else a security suite should do (scans your netbook efficiently, gives you tips and explains what problems are). Call me naive, but this sounds like the perfect package, and not too expensive too (if you split it three ways).
Netbook System Requirements
- Windows – sorry guys, you’re going to need Windows (XP, Vista, 7) to run Norton. Not that you would need most features on Linux/Hackintosh anyways :)
- 300MB hard drive/SSD space
- at least 256MB RAM
- 300MHz or faster processor (not a prob, most netbooks run on the 1.6GHz N270, and the Intel Z line run above 1.3GHz)
- IE6 or higher / Firefox 3.0 or higher
