Netbooks – the Operating System Wars
There was a lot of talk of how Linux was going to steal a march on Windows by being the defacto OS on netbooks.
Too bad, consumers and companies realized they prefer Windows XP, and Linux is now only on a small fraction of netbooks Additionally netbooks wtih Linux OSes get returned 4 times as often (at least one manufacture mentioned this).
And the final stake in the whole ‘Netbooks will resuscitate Linux as an OS’ argument is that Windows 7 runs really well on netbooks. Customers are going to love Windows 7 – I have it on my PC, and would take a Windows 7 netbook over any other OS any day. It looks geat, it runs great, and it has multi-touch.
Customers want ease of use. Mark Shuttleworth and Ubuntu need to figure that out. You’re never going to have 50 million netbooks sold using Linux unless you create an OS that gets the love of the common people.
