Netbooks – the importance of long battery life
Netbooks have grown in popularity because of how small and convenient they are -
- Netbooks are ideal to jot down notes in class, access the Internet during meetings and to work on at coffee shops.
- They’re also perfect for short business trips and for daily commuters.
It isn’t just their compact size (9’ to 10’ in comparison to larger laptops) and light weight that makes them more desirable. It’s also their battery life, and in some ways battery life is even more important than the more convenient size.
Netbooks initially came with a 3 cell battery that lasted 3 hours or so when used to their full capacity (watching videos on YouTube, screen set at full brightness).
On a laptop, you’d be lucky if your battery crossed two hours – especially when you’re watching a movie.
The current crop of netbooks is simply blowing away laptops on battery life. Not only are they using 6 cell batteries to last longer, they’re improving on power usage consistently and extending their battery life to unheard of extents -
- The Asus Eee PC 1000HA’s 6 cell battery gives it a lifespan up to 7 hours.
- Asus 1000HE improves on that and can last up to 8 hrs.
- The Samsung N120 is even better and has an amazing battery life – it can last up to 10.5 hrs.
- The MSI Wind U115 claims to last as long as 13 hours on a single charge of its battery. If you go with the 9 cell battery you can go even longer.
This rapid and impressive increase in battery life has finally made personal computing free of power cords and power outlets.

Netbooks are the Energizer Bunnies of the PC World
So … What do Long Battery Life Netbooks mean for You?
You no longer have to rush through your work at cafes, and on trains, buses and planes because you’re afraid your battery will run out. Gone are the days of worrying about finding and fighting over power outlets at coffee shops and airports, and of buying lengthy notebook power cords to reach those faraway outlets.
You do not even have to take your bulky power adaptor out of the house if you’re using a Netbook just for the day.
The bottom line – if you prefer a Netbook over a laptop because they’re easier to travel with, you’ll probably love how the Netbook battery life allows you to travel and stay out longer.
Personal Computing is finally portable and we have Netbooks to thank for it.
