Netbooks Statistics & Trends – January 2010

A study of online consumers reveals some insights into who they are and what they expect from netbooks. The study, conducted by PriceGrabber.com surveys a sample of 1,680 US online consumers between January 7-25. About 15% of this sample – 244 people – own netbooks. The sample sizes for the individual questions listed below varies between general consumers and netbook owners.

A sizable percentage of people own netbooks

  • 15% of online consumers own netbooks.
  • Another 5% use netbooks provided by work.

Most own either a laptop or desktop in addition – netbooks are for on the go

  • 86% of the netbook owners also own a laptop
  • 73% also own a desktop  – these two stats seem to conflict with each other and indicate that about 73% of this survey owns all three – netbooks, laptops and desktops
  • 55% of consumers see netbooks as a second computer, not a replacement for a notebook
  • 63% of overall consumers use netbooks as  additional devices while on the go

Netbooks are used for the INTERNET!

  • 85% of netbook owners use it for web browsing
  • 77% for email
  • 46% (less than half) for Word processing
  • Only 18% responded they use it only for travel.

2010 – the year of the LAPTOP & DESKTOP

  • 11% of those surveyed plan to purchase a netbook this year
  • 12% a desktop – we’re so used to the rise of laptops, we really forget about the benefits of desktops
  • 20% a smartphone
  • 30%  a laptop

Netbook owners are elderly :)

  • 55% of netbook owners in Jan 2010 are between 45-64 years old, up from last year’s 43%
  • Only 3% are between 18-24, funny since that age group represents most students for who an inexpensive computer is the most logical buy.

Netbooks aren’t laptops – Half the survey don’t consider them as replacements

  • 72% of those interviewed consider laptops feasible replacements to desktops.
  • Only 45% consider netbooks feasible replacements for laptops.

The main reasons for this are uncomfortable small form factor, lack of CD drive and minimal storage (minimal!? these things come with up to 250GB HDD storage!)

What’s more interesting – 27% of consumers consider netbooks feasible replacements for smartphones! (That’s quite a lot! Would love to know how many of these are familiar with smart phones!)
