Netbook Review Format: A Guide

We at Netbook10.com pride ourselves in our willingness to continuously change and improve for the better. Just recently, we have decided to implement a standard review format in our netbook review blog.

From now on, we will be using a more systematic approach when reviewing a netbook. Our goal is to make our reviews more readable, more comprehensive and, most importantly, more comparable and useful. After all, if the reviews of two different netbooks have the same format, it will be much easier for you to compare these two products. Ultimately, therefore, our goal is to make the task of comparing different netbooks a lot easier for you.

What follows is a detailed explanation of Netbook10.com’s standard netbook review format. From now on, you can expect to find the following sections in every netbook review that we post in this netbook review blog.

Part I: The Bottom Line

In a rush? We understand. For you, we are starting our reviews with a short paragraph that will tell you quickly about a netbook’s unique value – or lack thereof.

The short Bottom Line paragraph will not tell you everything, mind you, and it is sure you will miss a lot of important information and feedback if you skip the other parts of the netbook review. However, our “Bottom Line” paragraph will give you an idea about which netbooks bear more consideration (i.e. which netbook reviews you should read in full) when you have more time.

In a nutshell: The Bottom Line part will tell you about the most important and distinct feature/s of a particular netbook. After reading it, you’ll know what makes a netbook unique – or, in some cases, not worth your attention at all.

Part II: Top Features and Benefits

Why would you want to buy the netbook under review? Is it extremely well designed? Does it have longer-than-standard battery life? The second part of our netbook review will tell you.

Under the Top features and Benefits part, you will get a rundown and a discussion of a netbook’s best features and benefits; around 5-7 top features and benefits will be discussed here. You can think of this next section as the elaboration and extension of the positive things that have been noted in the Bottom Line part.

In a nutshell: The Top Features and Benefits part will tell you about the best features of a particular netbook and the benefits of owning this netbook. It’s all about the pros. After reading it, you’ll know the things in which a netbook excels and you’ll have an answer to the question: Why this netbook?

Part III: Drawbacks and Things to Keep in Mind

Why would you NOT want to buy the netbook under review? If you want to know about potential (note the word: potential) issues that may arise if you choose a certain netbook, you’ll find them here.

The third part of our netbook reviews will give you a concise rundown of a netbook’s potential drawbacks. We say potential because what someone considers a disadvantage may not be a disadvantage to another user. For instance, an audiophile may find the lack of decent speakers on a netbook a deal breaker, but another who sees himself using his netbook mainly for data encoding work may not find the inferior speakers a significant flaw.

Thus, in this part, we will make likely issues known; however, we will let you be the judge of their significance or importance; whether these issues are a big deal or not depends on your unique needs. Naturally, we shall highlight the things that you should keep in mind so we can guide you in your assessment of a netbook’s possible drawbacks.

In a nutshell: The Drawbacks and Things to Keep in Mind part will give you an objective analysis of a netbook’s flaws. If the second part deals with the pros, this part deals with the cons and the compromises in design and performance that have been made (if any) so that a netbook will have all the great features and benefits discussed in the second part of the netbook review. Through this, we aim to give you a fair and an unskewed review of a netbook.

Part IV: Netbook Ratings

On a scale of 1 to 7, how does a netbook measure up? You’ll find the answer in the Netbook Ratings part.

In our Netbook Ratings section, you will see how good a netbook scores in terms of the following ratings criteria: Price & value for money, Speed & performance, Screen, Keyboard & usability, Portability & battery life, Looks & design, and Extensibility & connectivity. This section will come in very handy after the benefits and drawbacks sections. The Netbook Ratings part will give you a solid system for assessing how good a netbook is, overall.

In a nutshell: The Netbook Ratings part will tell you how a netbook measures up against netbook configuration standards. This will give you a holistic and an easy-to-use method for rating a netbook and comparing different netbooks.  Read the post on our netbook ratings criteria to learn more.

Part V: Netbook Specs

Are you technically proficient? This is for you. If you can read a list of netbook specs and know immediately what they imply in terms of performance and “fit” (to your needs, that is), then you’ll love the Netbook Specs part.

The Netbook Specs part will give you exactly what its name says: a list of a netbook’s specifications. It will tell you what you’ll find on and inside a particular netbook. How many USB ports does a netbook have? How big is its screen? Does it have a hard drive, and how much space does it have? You’ll find straight, matter-of-fact answers to such questions under this section. We shall, of course, highlight notable specs for even easier reading.

In a nutshell: The Netbook Specs part will tell you about the technical specifications of a netbook. Under this section, you’ll find what you usually find in netbook manufacturers’ manuals: RAM, Processor speed, USB ports, Wi-Fi protocol, and other such info.

Part VI: Recommendation and Our Take

Should you buy the netbook under review or should you keep looking? Go to the final part of the review and you will find an answer to this question.

In the Recommendation and Our Take part of our netbook reviews, we will tell you why we recommend a netbook. In this section, the netbook review will come full-circle and bring you back to the Bottom Line. This way, we hope to help you sort through all the information that you have come across in the previous sections. By making you keep sight of the Bottom Line, we hope to be able to help you come to a final decision.

In a nutshell: In the Recommendation and Our Take part, you’ll get an expert summation of the netbook under review. We will highlight the most important feature/benefit of a netbook – that which makes a particular netbook ideal (in certain circumstances). You’ll find out in this section why a netbook is recommended and for what purpose or use it is best suited.
