NEC Versa Pro Ultralite – Light weight, Heavy Price Tag

NEC is releasing its Versa Pro Ultralite netbook this July in Japan for $1,800. Yup, you heard that right. Apparently NEC missed the point where netbooks = cheap.
So what are the Ultralite’s comprising factors that make it actually worth the $1,800?
- It’s the lightest 10” netbook at 1.5 pounds (compare that to the 8” Vaio P which weighs 1.4 pounds).
- It measures 0.62” at thinnest and 1.17” at thickest. While it isn’t the best-looking netbook by a long shot, its side profile sure is sexy.
The Ultralite has pretty standard netbook specs with an above par processor and graphics card. NEC also managed to fit in 3 USB ports which is impressive, but left out a VGA port which must be a hindrance for businessmen and presenters.
Other drawbacks include the weirdly positioned keyboard (see picture) and the lack of a touch pad. All this makes you wonder why the netbook is so very expensive.
Especially when you compare this tiny netbook to one of the tiniest notebooks – the MacBook Air. Note that both devices come with the price tag of $1,800 (I’m using the ‘cheaper’ MacBook Air for this comparison). I’ve highlighted specs that differ the most:

The Ultralite is really only better when you it comes to size and weight. With the $1,800 price tag, you’re better off sucking it up and lugging around a heavier — cheaper — computer.
