MSI Wind U100 vs. MSI Wind U100 Plus

What differentiates the MSI Wind U100 which is the first ever netbook released by MSI from their latest release the MSI Wind U100 Plus?

Well, aside from the “Plus” that is.

Let’s see. Both netbooks have the standard specifications. Let me list them down for you:

  • Windows® XP Home
  • DDR2 533 support up to 2 GB
  • 10” 1024×600 LCD Panel
  • 160 GB (2.5” SATA)
  • 4 in 1 (support SD,MMC,MS, MS Pro)
  • USB 2.0*3
  • 3 cells / 6 cells (optional)
  • 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth V2.0EDR
  • 1.3 Webcam
  • HD Audio, Stereo speakers

And, no I didn’t miss writing down the processor on purpose. That’s where the two netbooks differ. The U100 Plus sports a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 processor while the simple U100 only has the N270. At face value, only the “plus” on the name of the newer model is different. The U100 is a virtual twin to the Plus, but MSI is optimistic that their U100 Plus really has a plus factor.

With the N280 processor, the U100 Plus promises a longer battery life, and in today’s netbook market, users are pushing for higher battery capacity. MSI says that with the “standard” battery package, the U100 Plus can run up to 7 hours. They didn’t really elaborate on what the “standard” package is but I’m betting on the 6-cell battery package.

The MSI Wind U100 has gotten very good reviews for performance from Amazon users, and even from us, so there shouldn’t be major worries about getting the Plus. If it’s more efficient than the already good U100, then that’s all well and good, and could very well make it to our Recommended Buys list.

The U100 Plus also comes in more colors, with the new Rose Champagne and Metallic Blue colors joining the line up of red, white and black.
