2010 – the year of the Size 0 netbook
2010 will be the year of lite-weight cloud surfing. Cloud Surfing Zero-Point-oh (O.0) we’ll call it, ‘coz it strips your netbook down to a skimpy – yet functional – Size 0.
It all started with bloatware er.. software giant Microsoft decided to lighten things up with its Windows 7 operating system, going so far as to launch Windows 7 Starter just for netbooks. The last year saw lots of praises for Microsoft’s move to shell those extra pounds.
Google got jealous of all the attention and decided to forgo operating systems entirely – they’re too PHAT FAT! They’re a no-no. The O.0 netbook must be thinner. Skinnier! Get rid of those trans fats! No desktop apps at ALL. Google announced the Chrome OS – an operating system dedicated solely to cloud computing. Gets rid of the bloatware, most of the hard drive, the high power consumption…
Then other huge companies started to notice what was happening. All the glamorous magazines, ya’know Gizmodo and Engadget, were raving about those Size 2 netbook beauties. All those photos of those ultrathins and CULVs… everyone realized they needed to start stripping down too. After all, the recession made stripping down the new pink over the last 12 months. Ye Shall not Be Fat Wall Street declared to the world!
But surely, this trend of Be Happy with What Ye Have was spread further by telecom giant AT&T. After luring everyone with dainty iPhones and claiming the ‘world’s largest 3G network’ (or was that Verizon…hmm). AT&T made us believe in a world where you can get anything, no EVERYTHING! on your phone. Then they punished us for committing that grave sin of Gluttony. They made us share that 3G network with all the new sinners. They refused to beef up their lean network coverage, and thus the world of Web 2.0 socialites were forced into a telecomunic diet.
Social media companies immediately caught on the diet trend. Hey, if AT&T, Microsoft and even GOOGLE are dieting, it’s time they stripped down too! Next thing we know, Facebook – the company that ones represented abundance with it’s 350 million users and new directives features releasing every day – decided to launch Facebook Lite. A stripped down O.0 version of the site. Completely fitting with the times.
In retrospect, Twitter hit the nail right on the target when they started over 2 years ago. Twitter started out in diet mode from Day 1 allowing us only 140 character messages, and look how successful they’ve been! And boy are they dedicated to their goal! Twitter steadfastly refuses to meat-up. Why, they completely REFUSE even, even… (deep breath) advertising!
You know this diet trend thing is serious when a Web 2.0 company refuses advertising!
And now the trend is common place. Why just this week, Google announced YouTube Lite Feather. A stripped down version of you know, YouTube. Cuts down the comment features, takes out fats – the sharing and embedding features – and other such sinfully delicious after-lunch snacks.
And there you have it. Welcome to Cloud Surfing O.0.
And it’s making a timely appearance – New Year’s Eve. Time for you to commit to Cloud Surfing O.0 for your new year’s resolutions!
