Limited RilakKuma Netbooks (Toshiba NB100)
I have to say, Toshiba’s marketing team was pretty genius with the makeover they gave the NB100 – if in fact it was Toshiba who came up with it.
According to Akihabara, source of all news Japanese, there’s a new netbook out for kids based on popular Japanese cartoon character RilakKuma (Relaxed Bear). The netbooks look awesome despite being a modded version of the NB100. Let’s go over some pictures and specs before I tell you not to run out and order one (only 500 pieces, they started selling yesterday).

The 8.9″ netbook comes with the following specs:
- Processor – Atom N270 (1.6GHz)
- OS – Windows XP
- Memory – 1GB RAM
- Storage – 160GB
- Display – 8.9″ (1024×600)
- Connectivity – 802.11 b/g
- Weight –2.4lbs
It also comes with a digital TV Tuner, which is pretty cool. Click here for the Japanese specs page at Lalabit Market (spoiler alert: the page is unbelievably cute!)
Now on to why you shouldn’t buy it. First of all, it’s meant for kids. :) Secondly, the NB100 received terrible reviews for being its horrible design (which is hard to see now that it’s orange and has a cute bear on the cover), poor battery life (2hours) and terrible keyboard design among other things. Thirdly, it’s the NB100 - Toshiba and Amazon aren’t even selling it anymore since it’s so old (even though it has pretty decent specs).
And lastly, here’s why you won’t buy it: it costs ¥80,000 or $850. Compare that to the 8.9″ Acer netbook which costs only $270. True it is a limited edition netbook, but there’s no reason to spend that much for netbook for you or your kids (which is whom the netbook is intended for in the first place!) :)
