Intel & Nokia partnership

A week ago, Intel and Nokia announced they were partnering up to create a new mobile platform. While they were very hush hush about the details, they did mentioned that Intel would have access to Nokia’s HSPA/3G modem technology, and that they are looking to be part of the open source world.

Intel builds most of the microprocessors that run todays comptuers – and netbooks – and Nokia is the granddaddy of mobile phone sets and smart phones. Bloomberg suspects this means Intel will be building chips for Nokia handsets. Or incorporating Nokia’s experience with small powerful mobile devices into its next chip design.

In other news concerning Nokia and netbooks, Daniel Amir analyst of Lazard Capital Markets claims Nokia will be making a Nokia netbook using ARM technology (ironically Intel Atom’s main competition), and an Android based OS. (Via GigaOm) There hasn’t been any confirmation thus far.

As far as rumors go, that’s quite a big one! Nokia and Android are powerful players in the smart phone market, which leads to the suspicion that Nokia is looking to release a larger smart phone. But why is Nokia going with Android when it has history with Symbian and Maemo (software that runs the Nokia N800). It’s also interesting that Nokia is working with Intel’s competitor VIA and using the ARM microprocessor.

Also last week, Bloomberg reported that Nokia ordered netbooks from Quanta Computer (using Intel Atom) and Compal Electronics (using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip).  (Via IntoMoblie)
