HP 2140 Mini Note Review

hp-2140-mini-noteThe HP Mini-Note 2140 looks elegant, professional and really attractive. It’s got a good design and that’s the first thing I noticed.

It looks really expensive and really durable and seems like a good travel/business netbook.

Having said that, the 2140 is rather interesting for more than just one reason.

  1. For one it deviates from the normal cookie-cutter netbook specs because it has a lot of room for expansion. It has an Expresscard 54 slot which allows for x54 card use (SSDs, TV Tuners, 3G, etc.).
  2. The keyboard is also generous, and should work well with most hand sizes.
  3. Another difference about the 2140 is that while it has a 10.1″ screen, it has a maximum screen resolution of 1024 x 576, which is 24 pixels short of the norm. It’s barely noticeable, but if you want to nitpick, this might bother you.
  4. For $25 extra, HP is now offering an HD version of the 2140, this one with a resolution of 1366 x 768.
  5. Also out of the ordinary is that the HP 2140 Mini-Note comes with Windows Vista Home Basic as the OS, whereas other netbooks run either XP or Linux.

Looking at the other specs, its similar to the standard netbook (except the 2GB RAM).

HP 2140 Mini Note Technical Specifications

  • Atom N270 / 1.6 GHz
  • 2GB RAM
  • 160GB HDD
  • Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, 802.11 a/b/g/n (draft)
  • Vista Home Basic
  • 10.1″ Widescreen TFT
  • webcam
  • 4-hour battery life
  •  The HP 2140 also comes with 2 USB ports, Ethernet, and a card reader slot.

The HP 2140 is a bit pricey, selling for $448.00 at Amazon. The amount of flexibility offered by the Express Card slot and the 2 GB Ram somewhat justify the higher price.

If you really have your heart set on getting a netbook that would work with a TV tuner or can be extended with 3G capability, and like HP products in general, then the solidly built HP 2140 netbook / mini-note is the one for you.
