Dual Screen eInk, LCD netbook based on Android?

While browsing through the web, we came across this article describing the iPhone vs. Kindle battle in the universities. The Apple iPhone/iPod and Amazon’s Kindle are not exactly neck to neck in the ebook reader market. Apple finds itself in a much stronger position, selling almost 10 million Macs last year and having someone download the billionth app from the App Store very recently. And while the Kindle DX is about to be released (this summer), Amazon shouldn’t just focus on Apple. Even if the rumors of the Apple netbook/large screen iPhone are true, there are other gadgets Amazon has to worry about.

There was a mention of “a dual screen netbook that has two screens, a large e-ink screen on one side, an LCD screen on the other, and runs on the Google Android platform”. Will this sport the highly anticipated 10″ 3Qi display that’s supposed to hit the market in a  few months?

Mary Lou Jepsen, co-founder of One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) and Pixel Qi, announced last month that the 3Qi will have a low-power black and white mode, an e-paper mode, and a high-res color LCD TV mode on a sunlight readable screen. Pixel Qi is also said to be working on screens that lower power consumption, increase battery life, and improve visuals. They will also eventually incorporate touchscreen and multitouch technology such as the one used on the OLPC XO-2 (pictured above; set to be released in 2010).

Will this be the netbook that takes over the ebook market?

We’re still waiting to see which netbooks or ebook readers would sport these screens as they should be compatible with most netbooks that have 10.1″ screens, and there is no word yet on whether these new netbooks will run on Google Android. Until then, you may want to stick with your iPhone or get yourself a new Kindle DX from Amazon for $489.00.

This is a completely different company and product. In fact, the company is not currently in the device making space.
