Computex 2009: GPS maker Mio announces N890 and N1210 netbooks

Computex has officially begun, and sure enough there are a lot of goodies being unveiled there!

GPS maker Mio has decided to enter the netbook market with its N890 and N1210 – no prize for guessing how they’re sized. Both netbooks will be pre-installed with Windows 7 :) and will be available Q3 2009. Which may mean that Windows 7 will be available by Q3 too… dare we speculate? UPDATE: Windows 7 confirmed to release Oct. 22

Mio Features to Look Out For

  • GPS & Mio Map Navigation software – of course the netbooks will come with built-in GPS – that’s what Mio does! I wonder how the GPS rates according to other netbook ones.
  • Screen goes flat and display inverts making the N890 and N1210 perfect for travel. Also good for showing other people what you’re working on/looking at.
  • Accelerometer – like the iPhone. It’ll be interesting to see software makers use this tool creatively.
  • MagSafe power connecter – Mio seems to be stealing some tricks from Apple. I’m not complaining. If you’re unfamiliar with Apple laptops, this connects the power adaptor to the netbook via magnet. Which means the cord just snaps off when pulled and you can avoid damage when someone accidentally trips on your cord. Especially at all those crowded airports and cafes you’ll be using your netbook at.
  • Built in 3.5G – This may be an optional feature. It may also mean that carriers would offer bundle packages with this netbook leading to annoying year long contracts but cheaper netbooks. Also depends on which carriers team up with Mio.

There we go! Good round of features from Mio. No word on prices yet, but Mio expressed their focus on making at least the N890 affordable to a mass audience.
