Windows 7 sees higher sales than Vista ever did

Windows 7 hasn’t even launched yet, but sales of the pre-orders are jumping off the charts – especially in the UK. While the US, Canada and Japan saw huge discounts on Windows 7 upgrades last month, these discounts made their way to the UK only yesterday. Windows 7 Premium Home is selling at 50% off – from £150 to £75 – and Windows 7 Professional at 18% off – from £220 to £180.

In the first eight hours since the pre-order was made available, more copies of Windows 7 were pre-ordered than Windows Vista. Windows Vista was available for pre-order for 17 weeks. I guess we users prefer to good quality software that actually works :) . Sales in the UK were so high that many retailers – including Amazon UK – ran out of stock in the first day itself! Somehow Amazon managed to restock, and Windows 7 is still available for pre-order in the UK. Amazon France wasn’t as fortuitious and pre-orders are sold out.

But now, Microsoft has taken the discounts one step further. Buy the European version of Windows 7 (no browser pre-installed due to anti-trust issues) from the Microsoft Store and other select retailers and get  Premium Home N for only £50 and Professional N for £100!! (N simply means it doesn’t have a browser, Windows Media Player and related technology installed).

If you’re in the US and didn’t take advantage of the half-off upgrades last week, make sure to pre-order your copy of Windows 7 before they sell out so you can have it installed and running  before November 2009. All the cool kids are doing it!

(Windows 7 at Amazon: Home Premium Upgrade $120, Professional Upgrade $200, Ultimate Upgrade $220, and Home Premium Full $200, Professional Full $300, Ultimate Full $320)
