Battery Power Sets the MSI Wind U115 Apart

The MSI Wind U115 is one of the new netbooks from MSI. It has the almost-standard configuration of a 10″ screen with a 1024 x 600 pixel resolution and an Intel Atom processor.

What it doesn’t have is the N270 or N280. The U115 uses the Intel Atom Z530 which consumes a lot less power. In addition, it allows users to install the operating system and programs on the SSD that comes with it instead of the HDD. This “Hybrid Storage” allows the computer to shut down when the hard drive is not in use. It saves more power that way and actually allows the netbook to run *brace yourselves* for as long as 13 hours on a single charge on a 6 cell battery.

Makes you wonder how long a 9 cell battery could run, possibly 25 hours, virtually forever.

Early U115 owners are already pushing the battery to the limit. German site Eee-PC.de has proven the battery’s mettle when it used the Battery Eater notebook benchmarking test. The MSI Wind U115’s 9 cell battery can run idle for as long as 25:04 hours.

  • Closing Thoughts on MSI Wind U115

Netbook manufacturers are really pushing the envelope – a major advantage netbooks have over laptops is battery life. Even a 5-6 hr battery life makes a netbook much more portable than a laptop with a 1.5-2 hr battery life. When you start looking at the MSI Wind U115 and its ridiculously high battery life, suddenly you have a netbook that seems infinitely more portable and useful than a run of the mill laptop.

By cutting down on price, increasing battery life, cutting down on size and weight while still keeping a 92-95% keyboard, netbooks are slowly and surely eating into the laptop market.

While the Wind U115 is already available to the European market, there’s no word yet as to the U.S. release date. Until then, what we have available is the trusty MSI Wind U100 which is still a good buy.
