Review: Asus T91MT (and a Video)

Remember the catfight amongst netbook manufacturers to own the title ‘First Netbook with nVidia Ion”? We were all so focused on that, we didn’t notice Asus sneak in the T91MT – the “First Windows 7 convertible Netbook.”

We’ve been waiting for the Windows 7 version for so long, to see if the touchscreen experience actually improves with the touch-supporting operating system. Just these week a video was released (leaked?) and proves yes! the touchscreen actually does work, and now supports multi-touch gestures.

The T91MT is available for $532 – terrific since it comes with Windows 7 Home Premium. And you know, twists, folds, and becomes a touchscreen tablet. Keep reading to see how the 9″ tablet-touchscreen could be perfect for you.

Asus T91MT

Rating: ★★★★★★☆

Asus T91MT Features

  • Folds into a tablet – and is pretty tiny at 9″
  • Windows 7 Home Premium offers better touchscreen experience
    • supports stylus & finger input
    • recognizes handwriting from both stylus & finger input
    • has palm rejection – but depends on the program you’re using. When writing with the stylus, it ignores the impression of your palm on the screen. When you’re in paint though, it recognizes both inputs and results in two brush strokes (the touchscreen supports a maximum of two touches only)
    • has a touch screen keyboard app for when you’re in tablet mode
    • variety of touch options for Asus’s photo software FotoFun – allows drag and drop, scrolling, zooming in and out, rotating
    • has software applications for young children – games & storybooks
  • Invert display – with a quick nifty push of a button. Perfect if you’re in meeting with people and want to show them what’s on your screen without moving the netbook around 180 degrees.
  • Can act as an e-reader – Amazon did just release Kindle for PC yesterday and the software works on most PCs including Windows 7 running netbooks. Nice. (The perfect gift for friends. Or your favorite teacher, no?)
  • Double the memory space – 32GB SSD as opposed to the previous XP model which offered 16GB. The Asus T91MT also comes with 500GB of free Eee Storage online!

Drawbacks

  • No 3G or GPS or Digital TV Tuner
  • Glossy screen

Asus T91MT Bottom line

At $532 it’s steeper than most netbooks. But it isn’t like most netbooks. The fact that it turns into a touchscreen tablet makes it perfect for jotting down notes in class or in meetings. If you’re profession requires you do a lot of reading, you’d feel a lot better doing it on a tablet (easier to hold too, especially if you’re space constrained like on the train or plane or lounge chair..). From a netbook point of view too, it comes with decent specs. If you’re okay with a 9″ display — hey, you might be jumping with joy at how portable it is — give this netbook serious consideration.
