August 2009 a great month for Asus
This just in from Digitimes: Asus – whose 1005ha netbook has filled several slots on Amazon’s best selling computer list for the last few weeks – just saw a 14% increase in revenues between July 2009 and August 2009.
To put things in perspective, MSI which was doing extremely well during Spring, reported a slight 1% drop over the same period, and Gigabyte – whose TouchNote T1028X was perceived as a major competitor to Asus’ twist-n-tablet T91 – reported a more severe 16% drop.
All three manufacturers reported a drop in sales when compared to the same period last year. Asus saw a 11.2% drop, MSI saw a 3.81% drop and Gigabyte saw a 3.72% drop.
Note that all companies manufacture more than just netbooks and this must be taken into consideration when analyzing the numbers. Also note that the decrease in revenue compared to this point last year can be due to both the recession, and the fact that people are opting for less expensive netbooks over the pricier notebooks (this must have been a key reason why Asus a much bigger drop in the same period last year comparison, since the company is a major notebook manufacturer as well).
Asus expects to see netbook sales increase from 1.1 million in Quarter 2 2009 to 1.5 million in Quarter 3 2009 – which is essentially the back-to-school period. (Fun fact, Asus notebook sales in Q2 2009 were a close 1.2 million! And they’re expected to rise higher than netbook numbers, to 1.8 million in Q3 2009)!
