Asus EeePC – 7” Asus EeePC netbooks

Asus has such a huge range that I have to review the 7, 9 and 10 inch EeePCs separately. I’ll start with 7 inch screen Eee PCs available  -

  1. The Asus EeePC 8G/4G/4G Surf/2G Surf 7” netbook line.
    1. These come with a 7 inch screen and weigh just 0.92 kg approximately.
    2. They come with Windows XP standard. They used to come with Linux and Asus saw significant return rates on those and switched to XP.
    3. They come with a Solid State Drive – the Suffix indicates the size with the 8G having a 8GB SSD, and so forth for the other models.
    4. The 8G comes with 1GB RAM, and the others with 512 MB RAM.
    5. The *G comes in two colors – pearly white and galaxy black. The other models come in these and three additional colors – Blush Pink, Sky Blue, Lush Green. The Surf models actually come in Pure White and not pearly white – I bet that makes a big difference.
    6. All models come with an Intel Celeron M chipset and processor.
    7. Battery life is 2.8 to 3.5 hrs – with the caveats about standard operation etc.
    8. The prices vary across retailers – Amazon is a good place to buy Asus netbooks, and I’ve listed some typical prices below -
      1. Asus EeePC 8G.
      2. Asus EeePC 4G – This particular version comes preloaded with XP Home. Its available in Pearly White and Black. Pearly White retails around $350 (list price $399).AsusEeePC4G
      3. Asus EeePC 4G Surf – The black variant with Linux preloaded is for $314.
      4. Asus EeePC 2G Surf.
    9. I’d actually recommend going with one of the newer Asus netbooks. The 7 inch becomes a little too small unless you are specifically looking for a 7 inch screen.
  2. The Asus 701 SDX/701SD Line of 7” netbooks.
    1. These come preloaded with GNU Linux, have Intel® Celeron M 353 processor, and come in three color variants – white, black, and pink.
    2. The SD has a 8GB SSD and the SDX has a 4GB solid state drive. They also come with free online storage (10GB from Asus). The 701 SD comes with an optional 30GB external hard drive.
    3. They have a battery life of 2.5 hrs for the SDX and 3.5 hrs for the SD, and weigh approximately 0.9 kg.
    4. The 701 SD comes with a 0.3 megapixel webcam.
    5. Here’s what the 701SD looks like in black – Asus701SD It currently retails at $249.99.
    6. Target is also selling a white Asus EeePC 701SD at Amazon for $279.99.

Those are the two ranges of 7” Asus Eee PCs. Both these ranges are somewhat outdated so I would recommend looking around and finding a better newer netbook model.
