Acer Review, Asus Review – Netbook 10

Isn’t it adorable? A little Disney Asus netbook for the little ones.

Disney and Asus are teaming up on the Netpal, a Disney-branded netbook for kids aged 6 to 12. Priced at $350, the Netpal is an 8.9″ Asus Eee PC which runs on an Intel Atom processor. Windows XP will be outfitted with a Disney-themed interface that would include Mickey Mouse desktop wallpapers and a Disney browser. It also comes with WiFi capabilities but no 3G connection. Parents can choose between a netbook with 16GB solid stated HD or a 160GB HDD.

Safeguards include parental controls on the websites the kids can view as well as the ability to “whitelist” the people their children can send to and receive email from. Disney is also marketing the Netpal as an educational gadget, with a nifty reward system. For example, the kids can only use a certain program on the the netbook by earning points from an educational game that came with the Netpal.

Other features include:

widgets for Internet radio, Radio Disney

a webcam in the shape of Mickey Mouse’s head

widgets for a digital memo pad, calculator and stopwatch

a photo application that lets a kid insert his or her own picture on top of a bobblehead

It’s set to be released come July from distributors such as Toys “R” Us and Amazon.com.

When USA Today said that the “Netpal design is subtle and that kids won’t want to retire it so fast as they get older”, they may just be right. I’m 28 years old, and I want one.
