Android Netbooks – HP etc. looking to Android Netbooks

Android is developing into a very promising operating system for mobile devices. Andorid has the backing of Google plus a host of other big players, all part of the Open Handset Alliance (OHA). The OHA is the main body developing Android and Google itself spearheads OHA.

With the successful launching of the HTC Dream, which is more popularly known in the US as the T-Mobile G1, many believe that we’ll be seeing more phones running on Android in the near future. But then this is a netbook blog. So what is a discussion on an OS for cell phones doing here? Thanks for reminding us ;)

Well, lately, we’ve been seeing the same kind of discussion around the Web. That is, articles and blog posts talking about Android in the context of netbooks. And while at first it sounded more like an excerpt from a high-tech myth, now it’s sounding more realistic.

Actually, it makes sense. Android is a Linux-based OS and the first netbooks ran on Linux. Thus, it should be possible to make netbooks run on Google’s operating system. Mobile devices have limited resources … so do netbooks. When we first read about it, it was a hack by a couple of freelance writers from VentureBeat. Not from mainstream companies who are capable of carrying it out on a production scale.

Until now.

No less than HP… That’s right, we’re talking about the current number one PC vendor in the world. They’re interested in running Android in their netbooks as well.

So this got us curious (as we always are). What other netbook manufacturers are planning to power their netbooks with Android in the future?

Here’s what we got.

  • Asus – This was easy. AsusTek is a member of the OHA & it’s been proven that their eee PC line can run on it. Oh this is not just a speculation on our part. Bloomberg has that story for you.
  • HP – We already mentioned this awhile ago. Click that link above if you want to know more about it.
  • Compal - A Taiwanese original design manufacturer (ODM) for Dell, Toshiba, HP, and FSC notebooks.
Acer was reported to have toyed with the idea but eventually concluded that the mobile phone OS was not yet ready to provide a full Web experience.

That’s just 3. But with HP in there, we won’t be surprised if we see others follow suit in the next few months and come out with Androod powered Netbooks.
