Acer Aspire One P531h 10.1-Inch Netbooks Comparison and Guide

The Aspire One P531h is another 10.1-inch netbook model from Acer.  You’ll be glad to know that if your heart is set on an Aspire One P531h netbook, you won’t have to choose from among 57 versions as you would have if you are thinking of getting an Acer Aspire One D250.  In fact, customers from the US don’t have a choice, so to speak, as there is only one version of the Aspire One P531h netbook.

The only version of the P531h netbook is known formally as the Aspire One P531h-1791.  Since I have no AOP531h versions to compare, I have decided to compare the Aspire One P531h to the (almost) similarly named Aspire One 531h netbook instead.

Netbooks Comparison:  The Aspire One P531h Compared to the Aspire One 531h

What sets the Acer Aspire One P531h netbook apart from the Acer Aspire One 531h?  Well, aside from the preceding letter P, the P531h differs from the 531h in several subtle ways.

  • Designed for professionals

The Aspire One P531h netbook is for professionals or business persons.  This netbook comes pre-installed with a Windows XP Professional (SP3) operating system, but it can handle a Windows Vista Business OS as well.

On the other hand, the Aspire One 531h netbook comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, although one version (the AO531h-1077) ships out with a Windows 7 Starter OS.

  • A hefty RAM onboard

While the AO531h netbook’s RAM can be upgraded to 2GB, the AO531h-1077’s RAM is already at 2GB.  This should make this netbook less “sticky” for those who’d prefer the heavy Vista OS.  This also makes the AOP531h ideal for those who don’t want to buy an extra memory module or those who would like their netbook to come with a 2-GB RAM right out of the box.

  • Built-In Bluetooth connectivity

You can immediately send and receive files through Bluetooth with the AOP531h-1791 netbook’s built-in Bluetooth connectivity.  Unless you have the AO531h-1077 version, you’d have to have a Bluetooth dongle to do the same with an AO531h netbook.

  • No 3G

Unfortunately, the Aspire One P531h netbook does not have an inbuilt 3G modem.  This rather defeats the AOP531h’s purpose.  The P531h is supposed to be “the professional netbook” from Acer.  If it’s to become that, shouldn’t it have internet connectivity whenever, wherever?  The P531h should have 3G support – but it doesn’t.

If you have a wireless plan with a 3G network, then you should probably get the Aspire One 531h, all three versions of which come with built-in 3G hardware.  Of course, if you have an external 3G modem from your 3G network provider, then you shouldn’t have a problem using 3G with the AOP531h.

  • Bigger, bulkier and heavier

That’s right.  If you want a smaller, thinner and lighter netbook, the 531h is a better deal than its professional counterpart.  An Aspire One 531h netbook with a 6-cell battery pack measures 10.04 x 7.2 x 1.06 inches and weighs 2.5 lbs.  On the other hand, a similarly configured Aspire One P531h (i.e. an AOP531h with a 6-cell battery) measures 10.21 x 8.12 x 1.3 inches and weighs 2.8 lbs.

So, which netbook model is better:  the Aspire One P531h or the Aspire One 531 h?

If you want Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista Business, a 2GB RAM and built-in Bluetooth connectivity, then you should go for the AOP531h netbook.

If you want built-in 3G hardware and a netbook that is lighter, thinner and smaller, you should pick the AO531h or any other Acer Aspire One netbook model (check out the AOD250 netbooks).
