Acer Aspire 1410 Review: More than a Netbook

The Acer Aspire 1410 is an 11.6″, 1366 x 768 pixel display netbook with an almost full sized keyboard. It’s nearly standard specs at the moment with the release of the Dell Mini 11z. That netbook doesn’t have an Intel Atom processor, and so does the Acer Aspire 1410. It has a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Solo SU3500 processor instead of the usual N270/N280. Does that mean it’s a better netbook than the rest?

Features and Drawbacks
- Ultraportable – When talking about ultraportables, the 1410 really is ultraportable. Dimensions are 11.2″ x 8″ x 1.2″ and weighs about 3.1. pounds. It’s bigger than a 10″ netbook, but is not much heavier.
- Almost Full-Sized Keyboard; Average Touchpad – Anything with a full-sized keyboard is great in my book. The 1410′s keyboard stretches from one end of the netbook to the other and have nice, large keys for comfortable typing. And while the touchpad is nothing to rave about, it works quite well. It supports scrolling and multitouch with pinch to zoom capabilities in some apps.
- Great Display – The 11.6″ 1366 x 768 pixel display is great. It has sharp, clear visuals with crisp and clear images. The size and the resolution is just about perfect but keep in mind that the screen is glossy so expect to see your reflection on brightly lit rooms or while working in sunlight.
- Awesome Performance – The Intel Core 2 Solo definitely works better than the Atom. It can play videos (720p or 1080p) with ease, at least if they’re not Flash. YouTube and Hulu work best on smaller screens though. It can also work faster than the Atom when working on things that would need some CPU action.
- Reasonable Battery Life – The 1410 comes with a 6-cell battery that Acer says will run for 6 hours. You can get a 6-hour performance from the netbook, but there are a lot of other machines that can run on 6-hour batteries longer than that.

Bottomline
Bottomline is it’s a very, very good deal. The Acer Aspire 1410 is the missing link between the netbook and the ultraportable. It’s more powerful than a regular netbook with its Intel Core 2 Solo processor, but not as powerful as a regular laptop. Battery life can use some work but aside from that, it’s a great choice for your $$$. Currently, it’s available from Amazon in three different colors: Black and Ruby Red for $439.99 and Sapphire Blue for $437.00.
