$20 Netbooks with Google Chrome?
An entry from Netbooked.net had my jaws dropping. Google is planning on releasing netbooks for as low as $20? For a netbook, that’s practically free.
Looks like Linux expert Glyn Moody is predicting expecting thinking that this might just be a possibility. Google Chrome OS is cloud-based. If all the applications needed are web-based, the netbook won’t need a hard disk or a huge amount of RAM which would cut the cost of materials needed to make a single unit. It can apparently cut the cost of a netbook to as low as twenty bucks. Don’t forget that Google thrives on advertisements so whatever they lose for selling these cheap netbooks, they’d probably get back two-fold, especially if they stick personalized ads to your desktop.
If this becomes a reality, and Google comes up with a really cheap netbook, it can go both ways. On one hand:
- 1. it’s really inexpensive;
2. it just might work.
On the other hand:
- 1. everybody hates ads;
2. people (at least some) prefer their data with them rather than out there in the cloud so the lack of harddrive COULD be an issue;
3. Microsoft and Intel will not let them get away with it.
What say you?
