12″ Kohjinsha Netbook packs in EVERYTHING!
Quarter 2 of 2009 is filled with 12″ netbooks – but none of the other ones pack in as many exciting features as Singapore-based Kohjinsha’s new 11.6″ EX6 netbook. The tablet-touchscreen-netbook packs in two webcams, a DVD burner AND a finger print scanner in addition to what every other netbook offers. And it only weighs 3lbs!! Truly amazing.
Unfortunately, it’s only available in Japan and a little pricey when you add international shipping rates. Read on.

Top Features
- Twist & Turn and Touchscreen! I kid you not. What Asus did with its 9″ T91 and Gigabyte did with it’s 10″ T1028X, Kohjinsha does with it’s 11.6″ netbook! If you wanted something a little larger in size, this is perfect for you. Especially if you’re a school teacher and have a hard time reading on tiny netbook screens.
- 3.11lbs – with battery – Not bad for an 11.6″ netbook with a DVD burner. It also gives the EX6 a clear edge above it’s competitors. Namely HP’s 12.1″ TouchSmart netbook which crams in more muscle but weighs a hefty 4.7lbs.
- Built-in DVD burner - That’s right. Only 3lbs, and it manages to pack in a DVD player. Makes you wonder what made the first generation of 10″ netbooks weigh an average 3lbs doesn’t it? With it’s DVD player & burner, the EX6 might as well be a low-powered notebook.
- Finger Print Scanner
- 2 Web Cams for front & back – Not something I would have thought to ask for in a tablet netbook, but definitely a good idea which will no doubt lend the netbook to some nifty uses. The question then is… does it work both front and back when it’s in netbook-form? That would be pretty sweet :) (Resolution = 3M and 300K)
Things to keep in mind
- Price & Shipping – The no-Bluetooth-no-finger-print-scanner version is supposed to be cheaper at $630, but I can find it on the usual Japanese shopping sites. The version with the goodies is available at $937 + shipping from GeekStuff4U and $850 + $120 in shipping from Conics (ships to Aussie/USA/Canada/Europe)
- Ships with an International Japanese Keyboard
Rating – 6.25/7 + 1
- Value for Money -1
- Speed and Performance – 0.75
- Screen -1
- Keyboard – 0.5
- Portability & Battery Life – 1
- Looks and Design –1
- Extensibility & connectivity – 1
And a bonus point for (choose your pick) the DVD burner, finger print scannber, touchscreen, twistable-ness, dual cameras….etc!
Bottomline
It’s expensive, and you may be wiser to opt for the HP 12.1 TouchSmart instead. Unless the finger print scanner means a lot to you – which I doubt it does. Stay tuned for word on availability of the cheaper version. At $650 it’s a steal – Gigabyte’s 10″ twistable touchscreen T1028X sells for the same rate with a less features.
Hopefully, the Kohjinsha EX6 will see a lot of success in Japan, and the company will decide to bring it to the western world (with Windows 7 pleez) in the near future.
