$0.99 Netbook from Sprint

How does a 99-cent netbook sound? Good? If so, Sprint is subsidizing Compaq 1040DX netbooks at your local Best Buy.

What you need to do is activate the EVDO module with Sprint and get the $1 service, the same service you get from Verizon or AT&T for $199.99. Does that sound too good to be true or what?

Sprint netbook deal
Basically, Sprint is dangling this bait in front of interested netbook users to get them to sign a full two-year service agreement, the same service agreement you’d sign with Verizon or AT&T for $199 more. I’m still trying to figure out what the catch is since Sprint had won “the most reliable network” title in a recent 3G test so that’s a pro in my book. And for $60 a month across all three carriers, how can you possibly say no when one of them offers a netbook for virtually free. Hmm. Or am I just being too pessimistic?

The Compaq 1040DX is pretty much like an HP Mini with a 10.1″ 1024 x 576 res screen, 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270, with 1GB RAM and 160GB HDD and a three-cell batt. Without the contract, it’s worth $389.99. So I guess if you really want the 3G and are all set for a two-year love affair with a carrier, this is your best bet.

Also, if Sprint can do it, how come Verizon and AT&T can’t? And, if they do follow in Sprint’s footsteps, is there any hope that we see Asus or Acer netbooks in there?
